hello, a friend off mine is looking to purchase one of these, any feedback on the ssangyong make of vehicles would be appreciated, the one their looking at is the kyron turbo diesel 2006 model,
Go to a good newsagent and get a copy of "The Dog and Lemon Guide", its quite a thick mag / book on car reviews on almost ALL makes and models... well worth a look.
Here is a link to their site..

The copy I have is an older copy and doesnt have that model in it.

Did your friend ask you, and then you posted here, because this is an outdoors kinda site and they want a capable 4WD (that can really go real places, not just a softroader)?
If that is the case, I'd suggest there are much better fourbies out there.
Tyr exploroz and similar 4wd sites' forums
If they just want a tarmac tourer for soccer mum, then it may be fine. Ignore the haters who immediately think it is sh!t just cos it is not Jap or Aussie
No I don't have one, it is just sooo helpful to the O.P when he asks an opinion and immediately the responses come out like "it is sh!t".
Well why is it sh!t? Wannabe and sufringboye could elaborate?
Is the Mercedes motor and gearbox sh!T? Are there resident faults with any mechanicals that will cost us all money?
Is the NVH rating unacceptable for a car in its price point?
As far as offroad goes, does it have low approach departure and rampover angles, does it not have enough wheel articulation, what?
"it is sh!t" is an unqualified response of no use to anyone.
I think it is an OK car for the price, I would not buy one if expecting to go 4WD'ing (including goind down the beach)
Merc have enough dogs of their own. The fact that they source parts from them would be my worry- repairs could be lengthy and costly, most korean makes apart from hyundai have a long wait on parts.
And it probably needs to be clarified if they actually do source from merc or manufacture their own parts under licence, then it doesn't account for production methods, materials used or assembly.
. I don't know answers to those questions
nor do I care because I am not looking to buy a Koreanmobile ![]()
but much more valuable than a blanket statement that they are sh!t ![]()
thanks for your response everyone, i bought the book and checked the sites you suggested seems every-one is on the money with this one, when she asked me if i had heard of a ssangyongkyron i thought she meant some evil galactic warhorse..anyway the winner isss..........the.......Rav 4
cheers thanks again ![]()
nooooo.
buy a crv.
very nice car. i have owned one, no problems, and never have heard a bad thing said about them.
My computer screen is a ssangyong but it dosent look like a car.
I think it is sh1t because when it was time to get pulled out of a bog all the toyota and nissian drivers would drive past and laugh your crappy korean sweatshop manafactured peice of europenis designed junk...Imagine going over corrigated unsealed roads it would demanafature it self to peices across the track.
You`d have to ask for optional high tensile bolts..........
If the car brand was that good im sure mining companies would use it.
Another valid point is if your on a long distance drive or in trouble you have a far greater scope for help sticking to a popular model car.
toyota is a good choice....plenty of parts plenty of mechanics which can use diagnostics and equiptment.
Most non australia cars require dia programs and elaborate machinery and jigs etc
This in the long term this will hamper the maintanence and any repair work apart from being in a city which had specialized equiptment to work on them.-In which you will pay for..
crv is a good choice ;-)
Almost all car companies are suffering massive losses so that is nothing to go by. The CRV are nice but I put them in the same boat as outlander's (which I like)- if you are regularly going on unsealed/poor roads the suspension is just too light and the x-trail or rav would be a better choice. On the road though I would prefer the crv or outlander.
Just looked at price of 06 Kyron's, pretty costly similar money to new CRV or Grand Vitara.
Speaking of ugly cars...one of the local dealerships has started stocking 'Mahindras'...from what I've been told, an off-chute from a tractor company...looks like the Ladas are back!
(although I heard the Mahindras aren't a bad vehicle...from one of the salesmen.
)
Marhindrah's are Indian motor gee-gee company, and the big big Indian money owns Rover also landrover etc.
KIA and i admit stands for Krap Imported Australia, don't i know it, good purchase price
and that's about it. 2002 model Carnival 75,000k's to 2006 and motor had major malfunction, 3 mths after warranty ran out. Faced with $6.000 repair I got pretty angry [not my usual style], However they ended coming good and repairs were carried out by them. Problem caused by head gasket extremely thin. Modification, thicker gasket now done on production line. Took 3 mths to get back on road.
Drove 1000k,s and checked the radiator water , only to find it full of thick oil gunk
again. Contacted repair dealer [interstate] and they sail take to nearest dealer. That would be Pt Agutta. So he did work on it all 8hr day and charged me $300 for cleaning work to internals of engine. Cash before return of vehicle.
Cause was not draining all heater lines in rear of passenger compartment when they carried out repairs to engine, leaving breakdown contaminants insitu. All Kia mechanics seem to be Asiatic with real good English comprehension skills << JOKE !!
Ok so got back to interstate motor repairer for refund, no go said they didn't authorize,so even after Consumer protection advise just $300 outa pocket, end of story.
Trick i discovered here, if faced with this gooy mess in radiator, drive till motor warms up them empty radiator expansion bottle and clean, replace and do again until all oil mix is removed, half a dozen times.
Little things that make then cheaper, no radiator drain taps, no online fuel filter,
only filter on fuel pump imbeded in fuel tank. Any problem $400 new fuel pump , thank you very much. All modern cars will soon be built like this.
I could rabbit on, with disparaging remarks, but generally, they are only a city type transport, get to country roads and problems multiply. I do it mostly in the dirt. so now with 110.000 k's . I dont care !!
Good points , I can sleep inside, they make a reasonable tow machine, and the driving position is upright similar to truck seating, allowing my arthritic body to get in and out fairly easy and the drive position is favorable. Maintenance program costs are very expensive if you follow book.
So KIA, approach with caution , don't expect too much, but like the early Jap stuff , they will improve , I hope.
KIA that is just par for the course, when I was working for a dealer there were alot of them that sat in workshop for months waiting for new engines/parts.
Improvement is questionable. They get out what they put in- the jap companies had to improve, Hyundai recently spent more than any other company in r&d and it shows in their current models.
Agree wholeheartedly doggie, the new Hyundai's are good. I did mean that for companies to improve they need to invest in their product.
For all those out there who are to ready to knock the Ssangyong Rexton I would like to inform you that we have a 2005 Rexton, diesel auto. This has been by far the best car I have ever owned, having travelled some 90000 klms without a problem. in the area of comfort, power and ecconomy it is a hard vehicle to beat in its price range. This vehicle has not had an easy life and is quiet capable of towing my 18 foot glass bowrider to Fraser Island evey year. It has done a lot of beach work and we have travelled in comfort to Normanton and Darwin towing a caravan with no probs, so its a thumbs up for me![]()
