People in Europe are voting for socialist parties in their droves as they look to one of the few shining light economies in the west, Australia . Did we have the luck or foresighht to install a socialist government and return it during the GFC?

Hope it works out better for them than it did in 1937. Didn't work out to good for the Germans in the end.

We also had many years of sound fiscal policy under a Liberal govt so were in a good position when the GFC hit

"There will be no carbon tax under the goverment I lead " ......and ......" We will stop the boats "

We got the tax and now we're being asked to accomodate illegal entrants in our own homes. Are you just trying to wind us up, Floaty or are ya just bored ? The current administration is untrustworthy and grossly inept, IMHO, J

Ah thought this would flush out the closet socialists disguised in blue.Weren't lil Johnny and Smug Peter responsible for the greatest outbreak of middle income welfare ever that resulted in the current race to the bottom for the Mc mansion belt vote of Sydeney for which Swanny has done nothing to address as he doesn't have the courage and the lib/nats oppose if he go's close ? The best thing that they did was introduce the GST, should have pushed harder tho to put it on everything and made it 15%(retax the baby boomers and retirees and rampant greed and consumption) and truly repeal income tax and a host of other taxes .PK wasn;t much better ,at least they introduced the tax he always wanted and when he repealed negative gearing he backflipped when the fat cats screamed blue murder. Pathetic

You can't really speak as Europe being one government. Yes they have a European government. But in the end all countries had their own government and their own financial structures. That ended being their downfall. When the Euro started they should have put all the Euro-zone countries under the same financial structure. And they should have done more research into the countries that they allowed into the Euro-zone. Unfortunately a bit late now but better now than never...

However I still have a positive outlook on it, eventually they'll get out of the recession again and everything will be back to normal if not better.

none of your business ya pinko lefty born to rule blueblood nutter,I'll tell you this though it won;t be for mad Tony's lot the pretend tea party who have sucked in a whole lot of gumby;s who think that he;ll wave his magic wand and they can return to the good ol days as it was when lil Johnny ruled. If lil Johnn'y and smug Peter had have saved even more or built more infrastructure instead of squandering it on splashing all the cash out on middle income and corporate welfare they wouldn't be doing it so tough and sitting in traffic jams for most of their life.Well one things pretty well a good bet is that the lib nats will win the next election .What does give me hope tho is that when Mad tony and the crazies like Brandis ,Mirrabella and co stuff things up after 5 mins ( they;re good mudslingers but haven't got one good idea between them) there are a few brains in the party who will romp in and save the day. Mind you Tony has been learning quite a few new skills getting around in his lil hard hat and safety vest at least e'll find somehing to do when he's hoiked .

Hey, YOU started a thread about politics so it was hardly inappropriate for me to ask "who would you vote for?"
A vitriolic reply when I have never spoken to you , and I am none of those things - so fk you.

I think the salient point is that people are voting against sitting governments in droves. World wide people still believe that their own government is somehow responsible for the GFC.
Europe - going socialist
USA - will probably go conservative (assuming the republicans can find an approximately sane candidate)
And probably within 1-2 electoral cycles there will be a massive swing back when everyone realises that nothing much really changes.
