what kind of bird is this?

i'm in south east qld. it's been visiting the yard at the same time for the last few days. it's about 50cm long from beak to end of it's tail. it doesn't seem to be too fussed about people around

we used to refer to them as swamp pheasants growing up.

Hard to tell from a picture but unless I am very much mistaken that is a Higgs-Boson Partridge.

You can find out for sure by throwing a parrot at it. If it emits two eggs, one the right way up, and one upside down egg, then that is definitely what it is.

The drum sticks look pretty skinny, not a good eating bird, if you could get five of them you might get a decent feed.

Pheasant coucal alright, also have them at home in bris but super shy.

Pheasant, yum yum......

Not that I've eaten an Aussie one, but the English ones taste great
