Welcome to seabreeze Daz.
If you PM another Daz (kitehard)

..also try http://www.spearoz.org/
Hey Daz, welcome to Seabreeze!
Nothing wrong with spearfishing (and I consider myself an environmentalist, but a realist type, not a treehugging type).
Great way to catch a meal.
But like anything, some spearfishers go too far and do stupid things like take a huge amount of the population of certain tasty/pricey species that ruins things for everyone (other spearfishers have no chance, us environmentalists not happy, the ecosystem loose a link>less other species for you to catch, etc, pro-fishermen loose income, etc.)
So enjoy your spearfishing, drop the 'I hate environmentalists' attitude (one side not understanding the other, and emotional not reasonable judgement clouds the real issue and then the greater good for both sides doesn't come out)
I.e: It doesn't allow you to catch fish and enjoy it or us our happiness in knowing there is biodiversity out there
So I encourage you to spearfish, but only take what you need, get your spearfishing mates to be reasonable about catchrates etc (not saying you aren't reasonable already, only you know, if you're informed enough) and mix it up (species and spots), to keep it sustainable.
We want you to be able to spearfish for as long as it makes you happy, not just intensly for a couple of years!
Cheers and happy spearfishing man (btw, been thinking of getting into handspearing from a non-spearing background, is this really hard but fun?)
Ps sorry for the rant, but I like to clear up misunderstandings for the greater good of the environment (now I sound like a hippy hehe
!)
i live in the perth area and i have just recently just got on to spearfishing since the start of the year. i just have a couple hand spears and am looking at buying a gun soon. any advice on that would be helpfull as well.
in the perth area i know most places are marine park but i dont mind a bit of a drive (4-6hrs) and i have a 4wd to go camping up there if it is a bit of a hike from preth. i work away so i get a week off at a time. if there is a nice spot to go? i dont have a boat as yet.
i have only just gone off the shore around kalbarri, mandurah, margret river and lanceolin. with my week off i am always keen to head out somewhere. if someone has some knoledge/info.
have fun
I've been doing a lot of snorkelling/free diving since theres been no wind, I want to try spearfishing. What should I look for in a speargun, where is a good place to get a cheapie - The Quokka?
Also, can you spearfish along the Perth coast outside of the Marmion Marine Park e.g. at Cottesloe or in the deeper sections of the river, e.g. Blackwall Reach, Rocky Bay...?
if your about to get a gun u r best off to get a gun that will last for ages and will still be a good gun to use when u get better. u should look at a good brand rail gun(has a rail down the barrel) this tracks the spear straight down the gun and keeps it shooting very accurate. for a first gun around a 1.1m with a 7mm spear should be a good all rounder (can be used for rockhopping and also out of a boat). and it also gives u room to pick another gun later on if u want a bigger or shorter gun.
hope this helps.
Cheers, thats useful, I'll be looking into it.
I found out about where you can/can't spear around Perth
