For all the sceptics out there wondering if the insurance cover as a member of AKSA is actually useful and worthwhile, read an extract from an email i just received from AKSA. Is insurance worthwhile? Here are the facts. You decide...
As you will be aware the cost of the public liability insurance policy increased drastically last year due to several claims made in preceding years. These significant claims have now been settled, The claims that were paid in during the 2009-10 season were:
WA 2007 - Third party hit in head by kite bar being operated by an AKSA member - $30,000 paid
NSW 2009 - Third party property damaged after AKSA member lofted into vehicle (AKSA member was seriously injured but is recovering well from all reports) - $12,000 paid
QLD 2008 - Surfing third party seriously injured during collision with AKSA member – $95,000 paid
WA 2008 - Swimming third party injured during collision with AKSA member – $77,000 paid
The current policy has an excess of $5000, and provides cover of $10,000,000 for recreational kiting and $20,000,000 for sanctioned events. All claims have to be approved by the AKSA board before being considered by the insurer.
We are currently seeking quotes for the renewal of the policy so will soon know what the cost will be for 2011-12. To reduce the insurance cost AKSA needs to reduce the number of claims by increasing the awareness of members so accidents are avoided. Remember that distance is our most effective way to avoid injuring anyone else. Stay away from hard objects, other water/beach users, and have a plan to depower your kite if the unexpected occurs and you lose the advantage of distance. Follow local maritime rules and the AKSA CLEAR guidelines.
Ill take a broken nose for 30k. If it was a serious accident it would have been on the news. Like last night when the young girl who got life changing injuries in a boat accident and got nothing.
We would have at least heard about it somewhere.
not true. if nobody calls the media or if neither party agrees to talk to them then there is no story. i have heard of plenty of serious surfing boating fishing and industrial accidents that don't make the news.
This was sent to AKSA members to educate them ..... There is no campaign- just facts and the only douchebag is you Naiveslave....
Isn,t own personal injury covered for paying member,N.S.W.2009 incident $12,000 payout. for property damage .A.K.S.A. member seriously injured and received nothing, what kind of cover are you promoting.
^^ wdric
That makes a lot of sense. I know when i did my training, i was given an IKO training card. If AKSA, ensured that sufficient training, or maybe answering a 20 question questionnaire, prior to acceptance, thus demonstrating safety knowledge.
This would be a good way to minimising and assessing risks.
good call

How about lower the cover for recreational surfing from 10.000.000 to half that amount, seems unreasonable high. I guess that would change the fee quit abit?
Pretty sure that you'll find the councils where permits are required requested 10million as a minimum...but good question.
You should also note that if AKSA insurance did not pay out those claims - then it would have been out of the kiter's own pocket.
Unfortunately the kite surfing insurance market is not as mature as car insurance, that's what it is currently one size fits all, and will likely be for a very long time.
Fast forward 10 years and we each may pay different amounts based on where we kite, how long we have been riding, if we ride in comps, what wind we go out in, and even our likelihood of landing our kite in a tree based on kite brand preference.
which parts crap ,what I wrote happened ,you agreed ,AKSA paid out, seriously injured AKSA MEMBER only 3rd party insured and received nothing.Do you know what his medical costs and loss of income and time off work were.
For once slave (on a KSA issue) - an intelligent Question.
In the past AKSA (your state KSA central body) insurance was always thought to exclude kiter to kiter injury (on some "known risk" technicality???). On later advice I am led to believe this may not be accurate??? Perhaps you should press for a verified answer.
But then you would probably slam the disclosure of fact as BS anyway so why would they bother. Thats the trouble with negativity like that. It de-moralises and demotivates those who give up their valuable time to sort this stuff for us all.
Hey Wavey
The short answer is No
It's 3'rd Party insurance.
Like the compulsory one we pay on our cars (not sure if in WA its built into rego)
In NSW it's called a Green Slip.
Does not cover incidents between two kiters as the green slip does not cover incidents between drivers
Hi Ian,
How about this scenario ...
If a kiter who has club insurance collides with a windsurfer,
does the windsurfer get covered for his injuries ?
