Just saw on the news that the teenager in Bali was a Police setup

It is well known that the police work with small dealers to set up a bust so that they can extort a bribe. The problem with this case is that is already too late once the media gets hold of it.

I am sure they could have have paid the bribe and he would home if the parents knew the system. Probably would have cost between 100 -500 dollars.

The Australian model that got arrrested for 2 extasy tablets about 6 months after Schappell Corby got busted was able to pay the bribe and she got let off straight away.

I really feel sorry for this kid and his parents - an absolute nightmare.

BAli is a great place for a holiday BUT the police corruption is disgusting.
To become a policeman costs about 7000 aud in payments to police officials- once you are in you can make great money through the bribes. How messed up is that

Yeah it's horrendous over there, been going on a long time, hiring a bike or car is the worst ever, way too many roadblocks that you have to bribe the police at. I was robbed at knifepoint there last year and all the police did was make me bribe them for the bloody police report!!!!!

Bali

Over rated, overcrowded, dirty, well past it's day as a holiday destination.

I can't understand why people still go there.

Maybe it's so they can come home and show their tattoos off in a bintang singlet

If that teenager did not understand that doing drugs in that specific country was a really really bad idea then not only does he deserve to have his head read but so do the parents.

Tend to agree. There are enough posters at the airport and information in the press about the death penalty for any idiot to realize its a really dumb idea.

Slightly off topic, but does anybody else think it was a bit weird that a late 20's Australian lady (Schapelle Corby), was taking a boogie board to Bali anyway?

One tof the reason's I find it hard to believe she's innocent...

Probably would have cost between 100 -500 dollars.

As sad as it is this is true, I imagine the police would have taken him back to the hotel to meet Mum and Dad and there would have been an opportunity given for a bribe. Obviously Mum and Dad don't understand the process, time passes by, media get hold of it, the rest is history.

As far as I know Schapele Corby's sister did in fact turn up at the airport with a bribe. Problem being it was only $100 which she got from the ATM on her way, as much as some aussies treat Indonesians as if they are silly that amount of money would be more an insult for the quantity she had. She was probaly 10 or 20K short.

The Australian model that got arrrested for 2 extasy tablets about 6 months after Schappell Corby got busted was able to pay the bribe and she got let off straight away.

So I take it everyone has seen schapeles family on TV and how bright they are..NOT. well they are to blame for her situation. Unlike the Model who had a very wealthy Australian boyfriend and obviously some brains, she spent something like 10 days in the denpasar lock up, which still would be unpleasant but nothing like Kerobokan.

Any readers out there interested in a good story get your hands on the Sunday Smuggler. Good insight to the Corruption and the prisons of Indo and how many lives have been ruined.

Trying to let this one past, but just can't.

Must correct you there.

First foamie at age 7, first fibreglass board (a great day still) at age 10 (1977).

34 odd years surfing.

I certainly don't claim to be great, or even good, however I've made it into and out of a few shacks, jammed a few re entries, snapped a few boards in overhead reef waves and logged enough water hours to have 3 surfers ear operations in that time.

First Indo trip 1989, still a bamboo ladder to the cave at Ulu, Bingin was almost a secret spot then.

Half a dozen or so Indo surf trips since then.

Why my current opinion?

2008, G-Land, 300 people in the camps, not a wave ridden without a drop in, arrogant aggressive Brazilians, travelling surfers from all over Europe and the States (what, there are no waves closer than a 20 hour plane ride?).

Same year, Sumbawa, paddling out before dawn to find 10 surfers in the line up already. By the time the sun comes over the hill at 7am there are 40 surfers in the water.

My experience has shown me that, in the search for surfing fun, ie uncrowded, quality waves, Indo doesn't deliver anymore.

95% of the lemmings that go there don't go to surf anyway, and that is my original point, why go there at all?

One of the best quotes on Seabreeze, no, wait, one of the best quotes in modern literature including all of the internet.

I applaud your obvious grasp of the technical points of the sport, as well as your direct assessment, well said sir.

ok the kid has been in the lock up for 6 days now

Lets do a poll on what you think the outcome will be

A - The aussie government gets him out

B - He gets 18months - 4 years in Kerobokan with Schapelle

C - He gets 6+ years

D - They get the bribe payed and he gets off

what do you reckon???

It wasn't that long ago that Indonesia kicked up a big stink about underage people smugglers being kept in prison in OZ, So I don't see how they can then go and keep a 14 yr old kid in prison for a couple of grams of marijuana.

Ok fair points, you seem completely qualified to make that asessment. I have only been there once, maybe I got lucky because it wasn't too crowded, and I had some awesome waves. It was 8 years ago though so maybe it's worse now. I still think Bali has a lot to offer as a holiday destination though, and you have to remember it is the 3rd world, so it's not for everybody.

A while ago I had first hand experience at what this kid is going through. I know what it is like. Easy to make fun or say he deserved it, harder to stand by him. Best of luck to his family.

Give me Gero anytime.
been to Bali too.
A couple rules of thumb work for me might be good to reflect on but little comfort in hindsight for a kid in the lock up.

1. Learn the language enough to say "hello, thank you, I'm sorry and goodbye"
2. Know your place - that place ain't mine it's theirs.
3. Know the rules and follow them

Too true Gavin, and the kid probably wouldn't have raised an eyebrow with that quantity in Gero either.

Hm,

When you say Suksama - they know you speak a bit Balinese and they just smile, reply the same and leave you alone

When you say Terima Kasih or No Thanks - it might not be the same result...

I recon, he was keen to buy some drugs. Everyone knows what the penalty is.
