I'm living in Perth, but grew up in Sydney and skiing is my number 1 thing. So whilst the kiting has been awesome, I've been missing the snow like a mofo.
The g/f has just been promoted to a Sydney job within the same company, so we'll be going back in the new year. I'm psyched about being back with family, friends and being closer to the snow again, but uber bummed about my wind situation.
Has anyone in my shoes figured out the best place (in Australia!) to live that satsifies both their snow and wind cravings?
Sydney I guess will do for the time being - but I can the traffic doign my head in......
I'm moving to the US
Either portland or san fran, both have skiing within a 3 hrs drive, and both are good for kiting.
I'm an ski instructor and I've been skiing for 28 years
I started snow boarding from the early years of the sport.
I took a month off last X-Myth to go back home and skiing/snowboarding for a month, after 10 days I realized that kite surfing is better ![]()
I jump higher
I jump safer
I don't stand in the queue
I don't pay for anything else but my equipment
I live my life every day and I kite surf every day
All I miss is that quiet time of snowing in the middle of the night.
Interested to know where in Australia you can have both but I think as mentioned before NZ is the place
From Melbourne you can be at Mt Buller in 3 hours, or Mt Hotham and Falls Creek in 5 hours.
If you want to ride XC skis you can get to Lake Mountain in 1.5. Zooming around on skate skis is a lot of fun if you're into that sort of thing.
Mt Baw Baw has lifts but the runs are pretty small. There's plenty of trails but the quality is not so good.
Mt Stirling has excellent XC and is right next to Mt Buller.
You need to live on the right side of town to get to the mountains quickly. Crossing town or going around the ring rd can add an hour each way.
I gave up skiing a dozen years ago. I hate the queues and all the crowding and attitudes at downhill resorts. The surf in winter is excellent and I can be down the coast in just on an hour.
I had a saying for all my holidays.
"No surf, no snow, no go" ![]()
Kiting has scratched that itch to the point where I can't stand paying punter prices in oz for marginal snow conditions, crowds, and dwindling good areas for out of bounds skiing.
BTW Have you seen the quicksilver-red bull movie 'That's it, that's all'? Even if your not into snow boarding; it has to be one of the/ if not the best sport action movie ever made. Took nearly 3 years to film and the biggest budget snow movie ever. Check it out if you haven't seen it.
I did the last 2 seasons in Whistler and it's epic. Best of both worlds. Pow and park plus a huge mountain and endless backcountry. Plus u can kite 40 mins away in Squamish. I didn't know there was kiting until I was there so didn't get a crack at it. Big kiting scene though. I reckon the gorge would be dope to. Mountains in winter kite in summer. Check out any of the sandbox flick for value. Always fun plus it has a few Ozzies representing to
^^^^^^ Snowpark = Awesome - Used to go to the one in Dubai fairly regularly. Great to get your 'Snow fix'
Living in Aus: I'd rather live where the wind is best, save my pennies and fly to Japan or North America for a couple of weeks of pow, instead of snowboarding on ice over the weekends in Australia. ![]()
I was in Whitewater BC in Feb this year, it was a really bad season, and funnily enough, all I wanted to do was come home and kite. I've never been so conflicted! My sister lives in Nelson so I can stay as long as I want for free, but this year I just have no urge to go. I just want to kite. So weird!
Whistler is an awesome suggestion, but family will always keep me in Oz. And Melbourne beaches just don't appeal. Maybe the south coast is the way to go. Merimbula is a pretty cool place!
Next thing is the job, but thats a whole nother problem....
In terms of cool movies - anyone seen The Fine Line? really sweet footage
I was addicted to kiting then worked at hotham and got addicted to boarding then went to philipines and rode cable now all i want to do is ride cable. But have gone back to kiting.
Yeah lived in Japan for a year. Skiied pow every day from Dec to April and had no one to fight for it. Pretty mind blowing place eh! And at the end of teh day, an onsen and a beer....
