Was just putting together a 2010 Slingshot Lunacy - and noticed it has assymetrical fins!!!!! The inside is dead flat, and the outsides are a normal foil....
I havn't ridden it yet - probably will get a chance on the weekend, but has anyone else ridden one?
What does it do?
Why is it like that?
Is it noticable when riding?
Who think's it's going to catch on with everyone else? Surfers have been doing it for years - why hasn't it been tried on kiteboards?
Check it out -

Its a production ploy to reduce costs.....they make one larger fin then cut it in half hey presto asymetrical fins two for one.![]()
Hydro dynamics and aerodynamics are fairly relative ... I would suggest the effect may have some similarities as an aeroplane wing. Flat on the bottom with a curved profile ontop...... the speed differential and drag causing lift .....but they may give you more drive and lift from the board ......just a thought.
why do companies still make 2 inch dagger fins? 1.5 is big enough as it is and has more than adequate grip.
and why is that poor custom being humiliated with 2 inch daggers hanging off it?
close Charl, it's a consignment board with 1.75inch fins. Customer wanted 'em huge to get upwind ![]()
BUT - the Misfit and Lunacy BOTH come with 2.0inch fins this year rather than last years 1.5's on the Lunacy...
They aren't too bad, as they are short, stumpy fins rather than long narrow ones like the Undergrounds...
yeah ive riden the 132 a couple of times, i love the board. I use to ride 132 09 but i find the 10 abit lighter and the straps are better. But i can't say if i notice a change with the fins, but overall a excellent ride
What difference does bigger or littler fins make? I understand about the upwind thing. I have 50mm fins and i feel like im riding on a track and am soooo locked into the water. Are you saying that i would get the same feeling and stability on 30mm fins? What are the benifits/ downfalls of each size?
u do get better grip out of bigger fins and tracking but as to the upwind thing it doesnt make huge difference if u can edge properly.
with big fins they tend to catch easier makn u trip etc un needingly aswell as when u pop they can catch a bit n throw u off - the release just isnt as smooth as a smaller fin.
with smaller fins u can have the same locked in tracking feeling if u edge properly, but u can break it out easier and have more fun with it, when u pop the release from the water is more consistent and smooth also.
if u use wake style fins (6 - 8 inches long but only an inch high) u get amazing track when u lock ur edge properly but it releases very quickly when u pop, u can also break it loose and slide around more freely and catch ur edge less..
or if u can track them down small cupped fins are money
So what happens if you stuff an asymetrical fin? Do you have to buy a pair or are the individually sold? Sounds like a pain in the shpinny for retailers/stockists.
BTW my old 2003 (?) Naish TT had foiled fins so it aint new more re-visited. The TT was sh!thouse BTW and no fin in the world would have improved it! LOL!
no its just u get alot more joy and freedom out of smaller fins, even if the base length is longer but lower height because u can still get just as much lock out in with them but break em free easily n slide around if u like.. and i ride all conditions, surf, butter, pinnaroo.. i got 30mm fins on and they are fine, i can upwind just as well as everyone else, grip the water just as good etc...
im just asking a question and stating my opinions, you dont have to get all excited and rub one out over it.
hell go try it and u might even like it
i am riding both a 129 and 132 lunacy and love them. i find the bigger fins help a little bit when landing blind or wrapped as if the kite starts pulling in a funny direction the fins will help you stay on line for a second longer until you get the pass. when landing very fast ie: from a kiteloop the bigger fins help stop the board slipping out from under you. i am very happy with the big fins and have no intention of putting littler ones one.
i do agree with charldv in that littler fins do give you a little bit cleaner pop but once you get used to this board with the bigger fins you dont have any trouble at all.
not sure about what the assymetrical fins are suppost to do.the footstraps on the board are also super comfy and heaps grippy![]()
righht.... i find it much easier landing blind with small or even no fins at all.
but anyway if u want amazing fins get cupped ones.. i swear u think im joking but im dead set serious... has huge grip but next to no catching
Did Charles r00t someone's sister or sumpin? He seems to be getting a lot of red thumbs lately?
I could be wrong but i wouldn't have thought these fins would make much diff on a 1.5" or 2" fin. Sure on a big-@rsed surfy fin but twinny fins?
STFU Charles or we'll start calling you surfingboye ![]()
So do the funny fin doovawackies work for twinnies or not?
oh sheeitt please dont, cant u cal me sanz instead?
do what work on twinnies? i dont think so, what ever it is... twinnies are hard to get at the same time
