I saw in a previous post about AL passing and Kitepower commented on Big Wave Dave passing, which is **** news he was a fantastic guy. Is there any other news about Dave, I use to kite with him all the time at Palmy, Narra and Newport reef until I moved to WA three yrs ago.
Condolences to his family. What is with great people who love to kite passing at the moment.
Specimen
Yeh, Big Wave was a legend. Such a laid back guy. We all used to see him around hangin out at the beach and he made time for every one. That's **** that he's gone!
Yeah, real shame and shock to learn that Dave passed away recently. He was a top bloke. Learned to kite with him at Longy in '01.
Does anyone have a photo of him? I can't seem to find one, even in all my thousands of Mambo shots I can't seem to find him anywhere.

there's a guy with the username bigwave dave that made a post on the above topic on friday, and he said he was very ill last year(former treasurer of AKSA)
news of his demise premature? not the same guy? apologies if not.
Not the same guy. This is Dave Ward. Long time sailer and kiter. Always came to Mambo a week early and hung out for the week.
I am sure there is a photo of him somewhere from one of the Mambo years. I will have a look myself and if it is not on the MSC website I will try to post one.
RIP other Big Wave Dave!
Condolences to your family and friends.
Must have been a great guy with a name like that :)
Oh fek!
I must have missed this.
BWD's input has been significant over the 5yrs or so that i have been lurking about SB.
I am sure he was an important part of the lives of those around him.
Condolences to F&F. RIP.
I found two photos of Dave at the 2006 Mambo for anyone interested.
He won the old farts division, (the fossils).
Go to Merimbula Sailboard Club's website. Click on history. Go to 2006. Then check the photos from the preso. They are number 69 and 70.
There is a better photo of him somewhere over the years but I haven't been able to find it yet.
The detector.
So sad about this, Dave was a frickin unreal guy.
My dad (also named Dave) used to get beat by him all the time at the comps haha.
Cant believe i won't be seeing him chilling out at the beach again![]()
He's probably rippin it up where ever he is.
Cya Bud.
I've only just been alerted to the topic.
Dave was a top bloke-mate of mine since the mid-80's back when I poled about.
He loved Mambo and the whole vibe (I haven't been since early 80s).
Dave was one of those classic laconic types-didn't say much-but had HEAPS of stories.
He's survived by 2 sons (and grand kids) and his wife Shelley.
Passed away from pancreatic cancer-an insidious disease that is often discovered too late after it's metastasised to other organs(as occurred with Dave).
Dave is sadly missed from kiting at Palmy and Newport-he along with 3 or 4 others formed the core of the guys that were (are-there's a few of us left) always on it and on it early.
I'd expect there to be a drink for Dave at this year's Mambo (as a few of us had one for him when kiting in Indo this year-a trip I wish he'd made with us)-he's a man worthy of the acknowledgement.
Missed but not forgotten.
Indeed loco I believe there will be a Big Wave Memorial Trophy at Mambo this year.
I only knew him since my first Mambo in 2003 and I will miss him come the Monday of that Mambo week this year.
Sounds like you are long overdue for another Mambo visit he loco?
