Hi all,

I know the Cook Islands have been bought up on previous forums but the one question I do have is, do you need booties over there for the reef in the lagoons or is it mostly sand ? I have heard that at some places you need to protect your feet from small bits of reef. We are heading over in a couple of weeks and plan to stay at Raratonga and Aitutaki.

Good winds to all

Haven't been yet but I'd imagine like all lagoons you might find couple (or more) places that have corral amongst the sand.

If your worried about it take your booties, it's not like you have to wear them once you get there and look around - other wise don't put your feet down.

When are you in the Cook Islands? There's a couple Seabreeze'rs that are headed over in the begining of August and some other's at the end of August.

Rarotonga - yes booties are a must

Aitutaki - you'll be fine without them in most of the lagoon

Thanks people,

I guess it wouldn't hurt to take them anyway as you say, I was trying to keep luggage down to a minimum.
I will be heading over on the 3rd till 12th August so if anyone is there same time drop me an email.

Cheers

Hey lotofwind,

Flights were given to us (in laws frequent flyers), Raratonga accomodation is $180 per night, Aitutaki is $100 per night at paradise cove which sounds a bit cheap so hope we have done the right thing there. Prices are NZ dollars.

Cheers

G'day Wayne

We have a trip up there from the 7th to 14th.

You won't need booties out on the sandbars in the lagoon, its all nice white coarse sand.
If you're stuck at Akitua spit, they're a good idea as there is some coral rubble at launch point...
$100 for PC is on the money; its fine...

Have a good trip

Hey Lota - We're going for 16 nights or so and with all flights, accom, food, diving (if there's a couple days of no wind) booze, boat trips every day on Aitutaki so on and so forth - I've got the budget set for $3800 - was hoping to do a little less but we went a little higher scale in a couple areas but if you don't dive you can knock $300 or so right off the top of that price.

having said all that I'd imagin that the local airline tht does the raro aitutaki leg is pretty booked up

Hahah - yeah when we booked all our flights in March we thought that we'd found a hidden Gem, how wrong where we. Sound slike the place is over run by Kiwi's during the winter - hope there aren't any Rugby matches on when where there

The good thing is that the kite centre there only does a certain number of boat trips a day and they only fit so many people which is good (so I've been told). You can also get other boats around the Lagoon to take you to a couple of the other sand banks supposidly.

I can't think of any where off Aus you can do for 2k think all our flights where $1100 each and that's not encluding over weight charges we'll have to pay as Air Raro has a 16kg included only.

Best go buy me a Wallaby jeresy for the trip to wear around.

Sounds like I'm there right after you leave - Cabron should be there around that time though - look for the Cabrinha (think that's what he rides)
