Expressions of Interest:
OK Here's the G.O The small island of King Island (Tasmania), this year is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Cape Wickham Lighthouse (Tallest lighthouse in the Southern Hemisphere)
. There are numerous activities ranging from art and craft displays to cheese carving
to running
and cycling races
for both individuals and teams etc, of various routes and difficulty.
The plan is to have a kite surfing event also, either as fun or as a small comp from the middle lighthouse (Currie) to the Northern Lighthouse (Wickham) of which there is approx 40-45 K's of open southern ocean, reefs, rocks and swell. ![]()
The kiters that will be taking part in this should be intermediate or advanced kiters with open ocean, swell and waves experience. There are several good beaches
in between the start/finish that would suit ppl that would like to do the event but not the entire distance.
It it recommended that you also hold a current AKSA membership, just for peace of mind and to keep the people in charge and admin boffins happy.
At this time, we are open to suggestions pos or neg, ideas, help, and whatever could be useful. Also we need names of potential participants, the event will be 3-7th November, on King Island of course.
Love to hear from you, or your friends.
Pray for wind, 17knots due west!

sounds like fun :0)
is this event locked in, or just a suggestion?
keen to do it, but the earliest we have confirmed dates & event, the cheapest it will be for us :0)
I guess the main point would be to make sure you have enough proper safety boats with "trained" kite rescuers, and maybe implement some safety equipment for riders if it is real open ocean: PFDs and flash lights for example.
Let us know if this is happening, it would be fun, and a great opoprtunity to discover King Island.
All the best,
En
Hey tinka
Do a search here for Kite Devil.
Hes "Da Man" for all things kiting in Tassie.
Actually I'll pm you his contacts
Sounds fantastic. I've had a couple of brilliant sessions on KI. I would definitely love to get there. Definite dates dude, so I can lock it in
UPDATE:
The expressions of interest is to get a quick idea if people are interested in the event. We are hoping to get maybe 20 - 30 kiters to make the event more exciting to both the competitors and to the spectators.
The plan is to run the event on the 5th November 2011 (weather permitting of course)
It would be advisable to arrive in time for the entire weekend (5th-6th )November 2011
Transport and accomodation will be organised later once numbers are more solid.
I hope this clears up a few questions.
Any word on this? I've potentially found a way to get there for work, and I need to decide whether to submit an application for a leave pass to my better half
Put me down as an interested Kiter...Sounds like a blast. Would be super keen for a KI kiting trip.
Just moved from Perth to melbourne...for other reason than kiting of course so will be looking for a few choice trips.
Grew up in tassie so know what the conditions can be like.
Another good block of fun today, lighter winds but still good conditions.
For those wondering, yes Tassie can be this good, but we keep it a secret mostly ![]()
Just checking.
Is anyone coming? Several people are wanting to come but can't get flights.
Still running on the weekend as described previously.
Be good to get people here if we can.
