Heading up to far north QLD in a few weeks and have these spots marked out. (between Cairns and Cooktown)

1) Yorkies
2) Port Douglas 4 mile beach
3) Wonga
4) the beach below golf course Cooktown
5) Elim beach north of Cooktown

Any others not on the list?

south of cairns but kurramine beach is awesome. The reef protects the bay making the water flat and clear. Can usually see the bottom even at high tide. Lower the tide the flatter the water.

Good windswell breaks on the reef. You will be the only kiter. can camp at the beach boat ramp caravan park for $16 per night

yeah I'm definitely going to stop in at Alva and Kurrimine on the way up.

But any spots worth checking out north of Cairns (but not too far north of Cooktown!)

I am also curious if the beach next to the golf course is decent for kiting and what the croc dangers are there? obviously you would want to stay well away from the river at the south end but how is it safe enough up the north end. If cook town is as windy as everyone says then surely this beach is a good option.

how is the wind here in relation to cairns? stonger/weaker /same ?

I hear port douglas is usually windier than cairns and a better bet for a holiday

I hear port douglas is usually windier than cairns and a better bet for a holiday


The problem with anywhere north of cardwell is when the South easterlies kick in it starts pissing rain which kills the wind. I would say Kurramine would be more reliably windy than cairns which wouldn't be hard - Any cairns local will tell you the wind can be quite fickle there. If you get the boat to green island very different story. Port douglas is much nicer than cairns and has better wind.

so are you saying that south of cardwell eg townsville area has better wind than the cairns area? and would the townsville area be a better bet for a kite holiday?

No one who went to the nationals would agree, and it hasn't been the greatest year for wind, but yes. You have alva 1 hr south that has good windswell and flatwater inbetween. Cungulla (haughton rivermouth) for real flat water (low to mid tide) about 35 mins south. Townsville itself that has a good seabreeze that bends inbetween the island and cape (warmer months) flat water on low to mid tide and water you can stand up in. Plus you could be kiting beside andy yates.
To the north Lucinda has reliable northerlies during summer.
Cairns (yorkies) is rough deep water and you head more into the chop rather than townsville where the waves are more the same direction as the wind.

Port douglas is nice tho and the coast between townsville and port douglas has some great places worthy of visiting

Cooktown is wiiiinnddy this time of year. The beach next to the golf course is only accessible by 4wd. We tried to drive down there in a 2wd hire car and it's a definite no go. We also tried to walk to the beach through the golf course but the scrub near the beach is too thick and theres also a creek to cross. The only beach you can access with a 2wd on an se wind is point archer. The point is about another 15 minutes south of the golf course. It's a great spot with lots of zones for different styles of riding. No creeks there, so less chance of crocs. The wind at the beach was always more than the Seabreeze graphs stated. Cooktown is worth the extra drive for solid wind. Cooktown is no party town, yet everyone there is friendly. Good food, cold beer and lots of knots for everyone. Comments about lame wind after cardwell is BS. Cairns wind is very fickle and port Douglas can be similar. Cooktown is in the zone for the trade winds coming on shore. Definitely worth the trip.

Archer point does have one very spooky little creek entering the main kiting area. Do not be fooled by reef or beach - crocks visit Archer point just like anywhere else. Does not stop us kiting but just be aware of your surroundings (low light kiting = risky).

mate what would you know?! I was confining my advice to as far as port douglas because that was the original question. cooktown is insanely windy for all but the peak summer months. So is TI. Not what he was asking but

The original question was actually north of Port Douglas for 3 of the 5 locations.....

1) Yorkies
2) Port Douglas 4 mile beach
3) Wonga
4) the beach below golf course Cooktown
5) Elim beach north of Cooktown

As for offering advice as far as TI, I think you may be a little out of your depth myusernam.
