Anyone here from Far North Queensland? Everyone seems to be from WA or VIC.
Yeah I probably should put this in the QLD section but the QLD section is saturated with only SEQ crew as far as I can see (no offense you lot).
There's got to be someone here from Cairns or further north. You can slip down most Sunday afternoons and see 20 or 30 kites floating over the palm fringed beaches up this way. Absolutely magic sight...
Firebob you may be a kite surfer, dunno, but I'd give you a D- for proof reading. I didn't ask what was the K.S season in FNQ, I asked if there were any people from FNQ on this forum. Until 6 weeks ago the beaches were littered with kites. Even now there's a few hard core out on the water. Lack of wind isn't the issue, it's 'jelly's'.
Whatever...
So I take it you are from Cairns?
Sweety I'm a worn out windsurfer and yep in Cairns, been through over 20 seasons here.
Sorry I wasn't having a go at you, what I was getting at is it has been dead up here so I'd say everyone's off doing something else till the wind kicks in again, I'm only here cos I'm bored
The jelly's have never been a problem, I only know of one KB'er being stung and that was on his foot, kitting in a very light northerly, don't do it.
I used to sail all the time at Yorkeys and have plenty of KB mates but now sail at Holliways, if you see an old bastard with red sail say hi ![]()
NQ rocks and is one of the windiest places in the world!
We already got some winds and had a few good sessions in Townsville.
Everybody is ready for a windy season.
OK cool, firiebob. I'm a newbie so I'll be the one stacking it regularly. I seen a few red kites on the water. What do you use? Also, what size kite do most KS up this way use? I seen a few 10's on the beach.
I'm not concerned by the jelly's. At least not by the box jelly's. I been stung a few times by them spearfishing and my daughter got hit in the stinger net at Yorkey's a few weeks ago. No issues. The irukandji's are interesting though. I've had diver's who were with me stung by them and gritted it out and others get airlifted after 20 minutes of hell. There's a view at present that perhaps there's several types of irukandji's. Dunno.
What's the attraction of Holloways? Less crowded than Yorkeys or just more convenient for you?
Sweety I'm a windsurfer ![]()

It's a good crowd at Yorkeys, it's just a bit hard to get a park spot with trailer during the season, especially with the influx of kite tourists. Holloways is just easier but I do miss the P taking after a good session. I might go to Yorkeys next time before it gets too busy again ![]()
As a fact, from 25 years living, boating, diving and generally bitching about the frigg'n relentless wind up here (one reason I have accepted the inevitable and taken up a wind sport (no not wind instrument), like KS, is that this latitude gets a steady trade wind from around April to November. Year in year out. We average 15 to 20 knots day in day out with at least monthly strong wind warnings of 30 knots or more which can last three weeks. Steady, consistent - hammering.
Maybe this isn't the windiest place on earth but you have to give it points for consistency. Perhaps its really all about kite size?
I read mostly WA and VIC posts on this forum. What are the general wind conditions down/over that way?
I know I bitch about the BOM getting their predictions wrong. Hopefully their historical data is more accurate....
