Hi. I have recently perchased a HD GoPro but I can't seem to edit the footage I take. I have a 16 gig SD card class 6. I can view the video on my laptop using QuickTime player but when I go to edit in Windows Movie Maker I don't get a picture I only get sound in the time line
. I have tried to set the camera to PAL other than NCTS & makes no difference! HELP please as I am getting frustrated with this & I feel I have wasted my money & time!! ![]()
Thanks in advance for any constructive help.
Mark....
i dont think windows movie maker will support the codec that the go pro records images to.
you might need to go here:
www.tapatalk.com/groups/goprouser/ and do some thread surfing.
on a mac - you will have no problems !
Dont fret - you will get it sorted.
If your windows pc is a bit of an older model you will struggle as the Go Pro image codec is very compressed (but amazing quality for the file sizes)
And please - no long go pro clips of you kitesurfing with a helmet cam - these have been done to death
Your go pro angle is a cutaway angle - and a very effective one at that - - not a main angle shot. (unless you are very clever and find an awesome angle that hasnt been done to death) Mix it with tripod shot footage / handheld up close and you may have something that people can watch.
On another note - the go pro is an awesome timelapse camera - have fun experimenting with the photo settings - and your pc will recognise the jpg format with minimal dramas
Thanks RF. So does this mean I'm going to have to spend more $$$ getting software to be able to edit & add a sound track? If so any recommendations that arnt over the top price wise? Or is there something for free i can download? ![]()
Cheers

Hi Backflip,
I use Windows Live movie maker. Works perfect with Gopro. Pretty simple program, but if you aren't trying to be spielberg, it will do 90% of what most people need.
Cheers,
DM
Backflip, have you downloaded this software yet;
www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-win.html
That will switch the file into a file that Window MM can use and edit. No expense necessary.
Thanks heaps for your help guys
. I will check out your sugestions & i'll let yall kno how it go's. Just need some wind & surf now, who can help me with that!?! LOL
Happy safe kiting..
Cheers.. ![]()
Hey Backflip
Post the specs of your computer so that you will get more useful advice.
In general: It would be better to convert the compressed GoPro video to an uncompressed format such as Windows AVI for editing. You will get minimum compression loss of quality then (but file sizes will be big).
An alternative is to convert the GoPro video to the format that you finally want to produce your movie in before editing it. But as Reflex has said, you'll need a 'strong' computer to edit compressed video files.
Play around on your computer now when there's no wind! ![]()
yep as the boys say you need a grunty pc..... the files are massive and compressed to hell. if you on a 2 year or older machine i guess your probably stuffed. as stated you need the correct codec. to play on windows media player. Also you need a pile of ram.
I edit on adobe elements. but its not the best.
Some hints. record different angles. as many as you can. board, helmet, line, kite, tripod. endless helmet cam is very hard to watch.
where possible do 10min max recording this limits the files size and makes for easier playback and editing.
decide what setting output you want. i record in 720p I can't see the difference in qaulity on my TV and lap top.
PS editing is a bitch it takes hours and hours to edit a small segment.... i recently edited this mountain bike trip at it took me about 20 hours.
Reflex is on the money. GoPro is pretty much useless in my opinion for making a decent vid. If your just mucking around it's cool, or as he said for doing timelapses it's actually pretty sweet. But for anything decent I can't stand the quality, look and vibe that a GoPro gives, especially not a whole movie worth of it. That being said I've filmed with one before and for some chase type footage with a camera on a stick it can be pretty fun to muck around with.
hey Ironman i use imovie on my mac it seems to do the job alright am sure there are better program out there, hope this helps
IF you have sh1t computer like me you can use CineForm (its free on gopro site) to convert the movies to avi trim and back to mp4 if you want. Makes editing slightly easier. I used it to make this last night:
Thanks foosdepilly
one of my mates at school told me about it as well and it works great for my use. Thanks for that.![]()
