I changed from RAC to AAMI for that exact reason. No complaints... But no claims yet either :) Gear covered in car while at the beach.

Simon.

I'm with AAMI and made a claim years ago when a board was stolen off the beach.

No problems claiming as I have portable goods insurance. Covers anything from golf clubs, to kites, iPads, laptops etc.

It's limited to $1000 per item though.

I'm with Westpac, and for $3 extra on top of the monthly premium, I get 5 items up to $1000 each, with a $70 excess/item. It covers any personal item such as phones, kites, boards etc. After accidently dropping my Samsung Galaxy into my pool, they gave me a new one for$70!

What you are 'told' & what 'happens when u claim' can be exact opposites.
If its not in writing consider it not covered.

Better not to ask is it covered. Better to ask "Can you direct me to the clause/s which relate to my kites (or whatever) being covered".
Then look & check. If its not crystal clear ask for clarification in writing. If they are confident in their verbal claim that its covered they will be all too keen back it up - in plain English.

I went through a contents insurance review earlier this year.
I contacted about 10 insurers.
Most companies wont cover kiting gear at all.
Others require full item specification and additional premiums for cover for items not in the home.

I got it in writing that CGU will cover kite gear at home, in the car, and at the beach (not in use) within their accidental damage contents insurance option. You dont need to specify items or values (unless over $5k+ from memory). I think it was up to $1000 (or more?), per item or set (kite, control system and board, are each individual items, not a set), no lower limit value per item, and unlimited total amount per claim.

I renewed my insurance with CGU.

I have not had to make a claim with CGU so far in 3 years, so cant comment on the claims process.

Have had all my water sports equipment insured with qbe home insurance under specified items. Cost approx 300.00 a year whether in my car on the beach at home etc
Yes I made a claim and had no dramas at all
The 300 a year also includes all my camera gear, laptop, sups etc
It's peace of mind in my opinion

I'm with Suncorp and they are covering my gear (not in use) only if it's stolen from the car or beach anywhere in australia.

The terms from memory are home and contents insurance + "kite surfing gear" up to the value of $3000.

I'm with GIO. They don't cover my kites at all. They cover all my boards and my windsurfing sails, but not the kite? Go figure?

Well my experience from may 2011........

I rang them to see if kite gear was covered and was told it wasn't, not even whilst at home under contents.

I was told I could take out additional cover for about $9.50/mth which would cover it whilst stored in car, home or while on the beach but not in use. I took out the extra cover and paid the extra upfront pro rata until the renewal date of the policy.

Not too long after I lost a bar. I rang them up to see if it might be covered and they told me that kitesurfing equipment is absolutely not covered and cancelled the additional cover and refunded me the payment that I had made.

I was pretty pissed....once the renewal time came round I signed up with Westapc.

Maybe they have changed since last year but be careful if you don't have it in writing.

i was told they wouldnt be covered unless they were specifically listed on the policy with their values. so i have all my gear listed on the policy and they are covered whilst at home and in the car.

I have portables insurance with AAMI - I nominated the $$$ value - so I said two complete kites @ $2000 each. Charge an extra $148 on top of contents insurance for the privilege.

Haven't had to test it yet though..................
