G'day all, noobie question here;

Does anyone think there is an age limit to a kiters potential, regarding entering comps with the hope of placing well?

To further explain, for someone like myself who has come into the scene late & is starting kiting at a tender age around the mid 30's , do you think there would be a reasonable expectation to be able to be able to enter comps & actually stand a chance of winning?

I realize that skill comes down to individual ability & time devoted to practice etc, but all things being equal, I guess what I'm trying to ask is that should us older guys learning new just stick to leaning & kiting for enjoyment only, or set our sights higher?

Or is this sport really a younger persons game, as far as comps go?

Thanks for reading, I hope to hear what you all think.

Matt

I think it's a general no to the whole question.
I think if you're a noob you're probably better off worrying about learning to kiteboard than worrying about how you could place in competitions when you can.
Just enjoy the sport and if you can go somewhere with it good on you, but most people just like the stoke of a good session.

I'm 32 my body stopped bouncing around 26-27. When I was younger impacts seemed to just bounce off. Gave up moto x to kite because as I got older each fall took longer to recover from. When I was 18 a big stack was not much would just dust myself off and get going again..... Not anymore. kiting is a bit the same. I will never be able to unhook do a squiggly and land as well as an 18 yr old as the body just won't bend and flex as much. But in a freestyle arena we can still go large ( and loop ) and the fact my body feels older is enough impetus to ride harder and make the most of the next 10 years before even that is out of the question

Of course, I understand what you're saying & I agree fully (Beersy).
From reading your answer, I guess I didn't come across as I wanted to, I sure didn't want to sound like a tosser.

My reason for taking up the sport is for the enjoyment of it.
I have no grand plans or self delusions going on; other than maybe even being able to learn to kitesurf to begin with

I was just curious as to whether oldies could aim to take up the sport with a view to compete later down the track, or if the experienced riders out there believe there is an age threshold.

There will more than likely be more corse racing in the future which will not be verry restricrive to age. And most masters events are for over 35s so if you are only learning and in the future get good enougth to compete then give it a go. Comps are great to enter just for the social side of things catching up with kiters you havent seen in a long time etc. We have a comp in whyalla and even people that can only body drag enter there is a spot for everyone no matter what your skill level.

i respect an old fella that goes or tries to go hard.
too many oldies limit themselves through the "ohh, i couldnt do that, im too old" kind of skit.

just remember, use a trainer kite before the big one.

GL wit it.

Mid thirties is certainly young enough to charge as long as you look after your body. May have to train a bit harder to keep up. Certainly the fellas pushing riding in the surf in our area are over thirty-five plus. Charge old fella -Rich (35er)

The older I get - the better I was. Remember, birthdays are good for you - the more you have, the longer you live.

depends on how they are trying to ride.
old on flatwater is like 35. (body becomes to stiff to make tricks look good)
and in the surf it is like 40.

on my scale, are you old Milko???
