Been kiting a few times at Wanda (Cronulla) and in the 7 or so times which have all been on weekends, I have kited alone mostly, a couple of sessions with a max of 3 kiters and one session I saw one other kiter way down the southern end.
Last Sunday it was nuking southerly. It did have a touch of west I'll grant which was undoubtedly a bit squirrelly down the southern end but the northern end curves around such that it would surely be smooth enough wind and cross-on enough. The northern end was however deserted. I would have been a bit overpowered on my 8m and alone and launching/landing by myself so I gave it a miss. If there had been anyone else around I would have been happy to make the long walk.
So questions:
• Where is the great Wanda kiting and social scene I once saw a chap talking about on a Kiteshow episode?
• Is that road that leads to what on Google maps is called 'Boat Harbour" at northern end accessible to the public? (It looks grey on Google maps as distinct from other roads which are white)
• How much west of south can that northern end take and still be kite-able ?
• Does anyone indeed kite there?
• Does anyone want to hook up in the next nuking south westerly to try?
hey mate,
Thare are a few of us there. I was out there yesterday and will be again later this afternoon. I was all alone yesterday.
The northern end is not a bad spot, escecially if you like flatter water. what kite are you on?
Each to their own...but why on earth would you advertise an uncrowded place?
Sorry just don't get it, I don't kite so I can socialize...most of us in WA dream of having uncrowded waters...weird...but each to their own.
Reminds me of people I used to watch in the gym, lot of talk but no exercise....Not saying that is you of course, but man how good having some uncrowded water!!
Hi. I fly RPM's. A predominantly white 10m or a light blue 8m. And I absolutely do love flatter water. Either waves or flat water. I drive past that Botany Bay chop-suey everytime without a pang of desire to go out and boggle around on it. Please see edited questions in first post.
I'm going to head up to long reef/narrabeen today. Always seems to be weaker up there but if the NE kicks in as forecast there should be enough to get around on my 10m (my biggest kite).
Cheers.
yeah boat harbour is a good spot for a southerly. It's better to have a 4x4 then you can drive directly onto the beach. $25 a pop though unless you have a half yearly pass.
haha and Eppo, depending on the wind direction it is usually gusty as f***. I don't mind this though and the benifit is it keeps the crowds down ![]()
Yeh fair enough...I tend to have my bro or a few others I know I can kite with.
Then again I do love the meditative solo sessions now and then.
Yo Ed,
If you're chasing flat water there are plenty of better spots that are close by...
If you're chasing waves, then weekend crowds and the flagged areas are a bummer
Negatives aside it's been a great year down this way, most of us regulars are sporting tendinitis, sore joints etc..
Re Boat Harbour be careful, in a sw wind it will be a good bit stronger there compared to wanda
PM me for more info if you want
Cheers
