I thought that one of the reasons that people (and ex poleys ) get into kiting is for the the lack of large cumbersome gear ,yet now humungous surfboards resembling battleships and paddles that weigh a ton and cost a small fortune are being heavily marketed at(and shock horror being taken up by ) kiters .(Having said that I do plan to get an inflatable one of these to take to fiji for the no wind days ,and for river rapids when I escape ) www.islandinflatables.com.au/product-type/stand-paddle-boards
Mr Float.....

I bought an 11'6" to start with. It was fun but I got sick of lugging this huge thing around and lifting it into my garage board storage rack.
I live 600m from the beach and I could just make it to the beach carrying the board on my shoulder.
I now have a custom built 8'11" surf SUP and it weighs 5.6kg. I can easily carry it down the beach and it's great in the surf. It fits in the car for trips down the coast. It's ok on flat water, a bit like riding a mountain bike on the flat instead of a road bike.
I still have a hankering for a 12'6" raceboard for doing downwinders and getting the great feeling as the board slices through the water as I flex my glistening muscles in the sunlight like a tribal warrior. (Excuse me while I have a quiet moment alone.
) Maybe when they get cheaper and lighter (sounds like some women I know.)
I am an ex sailboarder who now kites but 35 years after a shoulder recon I had to give up surfing and adopted goat boats " wave skis" which are now nearly extinct. I reckon some bright spark on a standup board will say if I put a blade on both ends of the paddle it would be easier. Maybe if I sit down to lower the centre of gravity to make it more stable.
Voila deja vu all over again. A wave ski reinvented. Now if I can only find my flared pants.
Gotta say as a surf craft in anything bigger than 1/2 a foot, I just don't get gondola's either. I've never been surfing a wave an thought to myself "this would be so much more fun with another 5 foot of surfboard". IMO bodyboards for old men.![]()
