Hi all,
Just realised the other day I have thousands of dollars worth of kite gear now..
completely uninsured, and I can open the drivers side door of my ****box with a stick. This is probably not a good combination..
Plus I'm always driving to work/uni, leaving it in the back so I can make a quick escape at the end of the day. Always leaving gear on the beach while I'm out too. Starting to get a bit paranoid!
Obviously most of you guys have even more $$ worth of gear. Do you insure it?
If so with what policy, what are the premiums and what does it cover you for.
Any good news/bad news stories with insurance companies?
When I raced sailing dinghies everything was always insured, even for breakages. Lets just say most people made A LOT of claims! I don't think the insurance companies spent to much time doing there risk assesments on this one...
You can add it onto your contents (house) insurance. Works for theft or accidental damage away from the home (not sure what they would think of your c r a p box if they did investigations). But it isn't insured while 'in use'. I think it was $40/year/thousand of coverage - over and above a free limit of $1000 (thats with AAMI) not sure what the others charge, and you have to list the items you wish to insure away from the home. I do know that they payout claims though ![]()
I had contents insurance with SGIO, I went in yesterday to add my kites / surfboards as a specific portable extra (i.e covered outside the house in the car)
They said kitesurfing was not covered at all, even inside my house! and that I would need to take out marine (boat) insurance...
so i cancelled and called up CGU and they said kite gear was fine. so its now covered all over oz and overseas for up to 90 days. My only concern which i have to clarify with them is that they say they dont cover water craft over 4m which might give them a reason not to pay if they argue the bar+lines are part of the kite.
Has to be locked up and there has to be prof of a brake in . ( if you get it stolen smash a window your self too be sure ) had a bike once was insured got stolen cause it was a trial bike had no steering lock .... insurence didnt cover cause it wasnt locked they are real you know whats when it comes time for them too pay .
anyone ever heard of a payout?
Better off chaining it all to a hard point in your car if your that worried.
Perhaps you could get some of those Pink Lady Sanitary bins and put your gear in that, no-one would steal that sh!t! ![]()
So AAMI goes pretty good for the rest of the contents insurance? ie stuff in the house. I've never had any insurance before due to poorness and unwillingness to do the research. Seabreeze will provide the knowledge i need. ![]()
Kite Devil.
nice idea
Got my kite gear specifically listed on the home contents insurance. Can't remember the additional cost, but it wasn't much at all.
