never seen that before and NEVER thought somebody would ever attempt to do this!
Good to know that your board will follow on the leash and give you the necessary hit on the head!!!!! But he was quite shaken up afterward when he tried to undo the lines from the kite...check his hands they are shaking....
Kiteshop: So, you're saying you were just flying the kite and it tore?
Kiter: Yeah, it was the strangest thing, I was flying it and suddenly the canopy tore for no reason at all. Must have been a fault with the construction. I haven't even crashed it into the water once.
Lol, I've always wondered if that was possible.
Lucky I wasn't the one to find out ![]()
And wow, watching the recovery, that guy went full retard. You never go full retard.
wow. what a muppet. thats shows a complete lack of kiting knowledge.
look at the big grass field right next to the water!.
thats a perfect place to launch.
To the kiter in the video, we are pleased you did not hurt yourself. Please take heed. Almost everything you did was incorrect and dangerous to yourself and to the general public.
Educate yourself about safe kiting, get some professional instructions, and you will do much better the next time.
i kited on the upper noosa river all christmas.
due to the straight onshore wind and gumtrees on the beach i did the same thing.
(launched from rolled up lines in waist deep water. not the crash part)
twice a day for a week and didnt have any problems.
good way to keep your kite clean too.
I would not be promoting this mate. Just plain dangerous. Especially with your board connected to you.
Let's see now...
No idea how to safely self launch - CHECK
No idea how to lay down a loose kite - CHECK
Keen to gopro everything before attaining skill - CHECK
Dude, you seriously need to get a clue.
There's so much information on the net that there's really no excuse for that to have happened.
The moral here is that money spent on lessons means you probably wouldn't have had to spend it on that repair.
Next time get a mate to film you from the side, would have made a better vid; those POV vids are hard to get an accurate feel for the fun of the moment.
IF you Kite Surf please Kite Safe!
Use the C.L.E.A.R Guidelines
Pay particular attention to Equipment and your pre flight check
Kite surfing is easy to practice safely with a little forethought and the application of common sense. Ultimately, individual kiters are responsible for minimizing the risk to ourselves, and to others on the beach. Safe, responsible and appropriate kiting practices minimise negative attention to the sport, and helps protect the future of this great sport.
WAKSA encourages individual kiters to kite within their own skill level and abilities, and to recognise their own limits. WAKSA always encourages kiters to practice safe kiting but believes that the use of safety devices such as PFD's is a matter for individuals to decide, depending on conditions and experience levels. For example, if kiting any considerable distance off shore, a PFD and flares may be appropriate, but may not be necessary for inshore or river based kiting.
WAKSA recommends the C.L.E.A.R. acronym as follows:
Conditions
•Wind strength
•Wind direction
•Always keep downwind area well clear
•Waves, tides & currents
•Consider possible changes
Look
•Before you launch, land, jump, jibe, etc
Equipment
•Always pre-flight check
•Use a kite leash
•Use a quick release on anything you hook into
•Practise using your safety systems regularly so that it becomes instinctive
•Never exceed manufacturers specifications
Attitude
•Always seek and listen to local advice
•Don't exceed your limitations
•Use judgement to prevent situations, not rely on skill to try and get out of it
Respect
•Others - be considerate and courteous to all other water and beach users
•The law
•Fellow kiters - follow right of way rules
•The environment
So he is trying to launch right?
Pure common sense an a understanding of year 7 level physics should be enough to tell someone what was attempted is outstandingly stupid.
My question is....who gave him this idea? Surely someone must have said this is an option and it works. Surely he had some empirical support from somebody vouching for the technique.
To the newbie, plenty of you tube clips and descriptions here alone on this forum to avoid such stupidity. And of course lessons. Even after lessons, check out the material.
Wow if it had been a big day, this could have ended much worse and made a news headline.
You can actually launch similar to this- that's how they do it off boats keeping one line wrapped up more than the others to keep the kite flagged. It's also how you self rescue in reverse by wrapping one line up until it flags and then winding all the lines in.
Problem is the kiter was clearly a noob, see board leash, and messed it up. A launch like this is difficult and should not be attempted with other kiters around to lend a hand if your a beginner. In fact as a rule try not to self launch/land as much as possible as there is a much larger risk of things going wrong.
Lucky he didn't get hurt considering that the wind was onshore relative to where he was standing!
Yep a very messy boat launch(and obviously wrong). Even if he pulled it off he would of had pretty twisted lines.
why all the red thumbs.
i can happily say with confidence that i didnt experience any problems with this method. the kite floats face down in the crash position, if you makesure the 5th line is in reach your sorted.
ive seen other people launch kites with way less control on dry ground.
i wouldn't post a vid of me doing it but it worked none the less
As in this video, drift launching is an advanced skill that should only be used by advanced kiters.
A dual front line flag system like the cabrinha IDS would be ideal.
^^^^ Nuking those drift launches aren't much better than the original post,I would love to see him do that from a dinghy in 30kn. By the way a single front line safety is way better for a drift launch
