Tragic.
Cant begin to imagine the 'anguish' (understatement - cant find a word worthy) of the family.
Im sure every kiter in the world will be sincerely sympathetic.
And we all take those warm water sharks so much for granted. So much for that bit of wives tale reassurance. I'll be a little more wary when Im in Exmouth next.
Sad news for those close to the young guy, I loath swimming for my board for that reason alone. I have had two friends now come to similar fates (both diving related one just recently)The myth about great whites not being north of Geraldton is just a Myth! I was diving of Exmouth decompressing under the boat looking down for a reef shark or two which can be a common sight. I turned around to have a 4mtr White eyeballing me about 4mtrs away. I had a Fallon Scooter (rare aluminium scooter) hanging from me pulled it up had it between me and the white. Seemed like it just wanted to stop and stare, I had no doubt what I was staring at a White pointer still have a vivid memory of it. Seemed like along time before it then swam out of sight. I had a couple of minutes to deco but decided it was time to get out of the water. This was quite along time ago but on same day there was an male Elephant seal on the Light house beach Exmouth thourght both situation were odd. Thats Why I use a real leash kiting. And use a Sharksheild on my SUPs both much to others negative comments I have received. Where I kite and SUP sitings and contact between people and Whites is not an every day thing but is not uncommon. I had one bigger white come with in 50mtrs of my dingy about 2 years ago, there were 3 reported to be in the area. One malled a swimmer out front of the Surf Life Club He survived this area is the most unlikely spot You would think! Still have more chances of being killed getting to the Kite / SUP spot doesn't put me off just more wary! Happy havin fun with watersports.
In response to sharks I have to say whites do not disturb me nearly as bad as bulls do... However tragic bulls scare the hell out of me and I have seen them on more than one occasion. They truly are godless mindless killing machines or may as well be :(
Tragic indeed for sure.
Urrr Turtle Hunter I did not know the Elephant seal hung around for years. It must have been on its first visit that we herd about it because it was a big thing back then. As for whites following the whales bad news for Exmouth folk. The Humpbacks are well and truly on the way passing through Exmouth from now onwards up to there Mardigras Party area Camden Sound Near Kuri Bay If you ever want to see a thousand Humpbacks spend 24 hours up there you wont be dissapointed more Humpy's than you'd ever imagine . So now yu may have Bull & White Sharks enjoy your winter. Wish I was up there starting to get Bloody cold down here.
Can I say that the f..ing greenies or do-gooders that stopped the killing of Whites and other deadly breeds of sharks, should be shot.
Let the Japs in to do our dirty work...they can eat them all! Well we let them take whales without doing a damn thing about it.
