you saffas sure are funny, some pretty out there crappola, nice vid, i was over there at ansteys beach in 2003 surfing, and saw a couple of blokes out and thought wow that kite stuff would be cool. after getting into some nice pits at caves then headed down cape town way i couldnt quite get the picture of these dudes fanging around in the surf and decided that one day when i return back to oz that i would have to give it a go... i got great memories of that place . cheers for sharing..
It's just riding in front of the wave using only the power of the kite. The fact that the wave is there is really incidental. It really doesn't look any different than just riding along. Sure you can get into some juicy sections but you can't turn it's just set an edge and straight line it. Now I won't pretend I am any good at waveriding nor have much expereince wave riding but to me this is not progressive hooked in, strapped in riding upwind. I am aware some spots it is a lot easier to get into the sweet section riding upwind but really that's what ruins it, how easy it is and how little you can do once your there. As rowdy said in an earlier thread, it would literally be harder to photoshop yourself into that barrel than to ride upwind through one.
Maybe I am being a bit of a critic but to me it is like doing a handlepass with a handlepass ring or doing a board off with a board handle. It's kinda cheating.
As far as I am concerned that vid was great! Thanks Rich......those guys rock, esp. the guy with the helmet cam..........far out, thanks for that. Music matched well too.

better to leave a section like that go unridden just cause its going in an upwind direction? dont think so.
or , should he be pulling into the righthanded pit from a downwind position. backdoor style and then busting out superman style through the foam... thats progression, plus he'd get super deep.. attack it from any angle you want , better to ride it...
sorry dudes, im not a computer nerd, trying to work out how to use the quote bit..
more like..computer kook..
I just like seeing photos of guys surfing with kites. ^^^
If there was a mag called 'Wavekiter', I'd probably buy it.
But there never will be.
The established kite mags must have a limit on wavekiting pics, we only ever get a measly ration dished out to us.
But seabreeze.com is a good kiting mag.
Seriously, it's kitesurfing-central in this neck of the woods.
Note to self: never post a video on Seabreeze. God forbid anyone kites for fun. Every video should be interpreted as a statement about what style of kitesurfing is the best.
Lets not share the stoke. Its always better to snipe.
</sarcasm mode>
Spacemonkey, does have a fair point and he explained his reason. Many of the guys were riding way in-front of the wave and claiming it, and from a surfing background it looked silly.
Whether riding upwind or downwind its hard to stay in the pocket and not overfly the kite. When you are drawing lines that are not surfing orientated, it is "wakesurfing", or kite-waking.
Cool vid of guys having fun....
Thanks for posting Rich.
I'd be stoked to ride in conditions like that at my local any day of the week!
I must agree that some of the guys were way out in front but I don't agree to style or ability. Most guys in South Africa are usually one kite quiver guys and usually they are 12m. The guy who made the vid is a shop owner and therefore has all the gear - and you can see compared to the other guys. AND the wind is nowhere as consistant as it is in Perth but then they do have all year round surf mmmm.
The guy in the pic during the vid actually did get a barrel or 2.
We should be so lucky that most of us have more than one kite in our quiver in the land of plenty.
Are we too spoilt here? Seems like it with all the whinging and b!tching going on ( and I am partly to blame)
Cheers
Rich
I reckon it's great! Especially at 2.33 when the guy does a board loop inside the lip. I don't think that I have ever seen that done by a kitesurfer before, and only last week while watching the Quicksilver Pro on Foxtel, Kelly Slater pulled that off in a barrel, at Snapper Rocks. The commentators went nuts!
Awesome vid, thanks for posting. The more poeple that leave positive comments on vids here on seabreeze, the more people are going to post them, the way I see it everybody wins. Thanks again, cheers Marcus
Yep, share the stoke for sure. Vids don't have to be "progressive" to be worth posting, and for most kiters I know, that vid has plenty in it that is to be aimed for, to progress towards.
It's true that not all kiters can kitesurf a wave how Kelly Slater surfs a wave, but not many surfers can surf a wave like Slater does either. For the better kitesurfers, learning to navigate the critical zone of a waveface with style and power is a worthy challenge and a relatively new art-form. For plenty of punters, there's enough stoke in just being out amongst the forces of nature and surviving, and provided they're not in the way of those who want to actually ride the waves, then what they do should be determined by what they enjoy, and that vid looked like fun.
I think the argument about being "progressive" can be a bit like some discussions of economics. People say things like "we need to do xyz for the economy." NO, the economy should be managed to serve the people, not the other way round. "Progress," is the next right step for any person or group according to them, not a totalitarian decree to which we should enslave ourselves.
Nice vid! I've got no interest in seeing people doing endless super spazmobe 720s or whatever the latest handle pass is.
I think we need a new rule on this forum: If you're going to call something lame you need to immediately post a pic/vid of yourself doing something you think is better. Hearing me monkeys etc?
Opinions are like aresholes, everyone has got one. Post a video on a public forum what do you expect!?! Comments. I'm entitled to think whatever I like despite being a total spaz at kiting so what is you point. If I don't like a video I am going to say it, deal with it.
P.S despite the overwhelming flood of red thumbs I think you would be quite surprised on how many other people would agree on some level on the whole wave riding upwind level. Just cause your a total kook and have been kiting for a week and think every video is cool, doesn't mean I have to.
