Pondering the idea of taking my gear to NY in August. ... can anyone get me 'fired up' by sharing their Long island kiteboarding experience??!!
Zot,
suggest you contact New York Kiteboarding Assoc....(www.nyka.org) or join NYCKitesurfers on yahoo groups discussion group for info http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/NYCKitesurfers/ - heaps of info about beaches etc in the area....
Have similar plans for July next year in NY - heaps of info about where to kite in/near NY & Long Island....
just been through NY with my kiting gear. didnt plan on kiting as we were staying on manhattan. one place you get some very twisted looks carrying a surfboard bag on the subway and trying to get a cab.
New York.... Very Nice! But where?....it's a big place. Hope you are going for a reason other than kitesurfing. Kiting may be better in WA... keep us posted.
Dont know about NY city as a kite spot, but I traveled down the East coast from NY to Key West Florida some years ago in a $500 kombi van and found that most nice beaches all the way down to South Carolina were in private possesion, which means you have no access, amazing fact that the beach can be off limits!!
Visited the Best Kite Center in New York a couple of years ago and it is absolutely the sickest place to ride. Based in Amityville NYC, Long Bay.

This is a real professional organisation. They taxi you out on Jetski to these little grassy islands, surrounded by flat water in Long Bay. Pretty cold in Summer also so take a wetty for sure.
Further to the North we also Kited in the Hamptons where we got some great little surf and kite past some crazy big houses.
Get in with the Kiters at the centre and they will help advise you further, even you have no gear, you can hire what you need for the day.
