Hi Peeps,
Spent a few days at Gnaraloo the other day and enjoyed the waves and wind, but WTF is with the beers available at the shop and the happy hour style drinkin' sessions before sunset?
At least you can keep up to date with Facebook and the stock market on your apple mac whilst sipping a friggen Latte in the morning at the shop? ![]()
I must be naive as I thought you go to Gnaraloo to escape all the crap and go for a wilderness experience away from the WiFi, internet, email, FB etc etc.
I know you don't have to partake in those things if you don't want to (and I didn't), but for me, the most attractive thing about Gnaraloo (apart from the wave) was the remoteness, the isolation, the lack of services, indeed the nothing! The raw and harsh unspoilt environment.
I liked the fact that you used to need a decent car/4WD to get there, but now the washouts are being repaired, potholes filled, so now you can drive all the way into camp in a Prius, drop in for a latte whilst you peruse the latest stock tips, check in on Facebook to impress all your friends that you are in the desert, and grab a few souveniers for the nephews and nieces before you leave.
As Bob Dylan once sang: For the times they are a changin'
Is it just me? What do you all think???
DM
Fair dinkum what the hell is going on over there!Spent 6 years over there up north in 98 onwards and now may as well just put up a 5 star skyscraper and welcome all the soft wankers there.![]()
![]()
Keep driving North and you will soon find the remoteness you seek, narrow minded ones.....Believe it or not, there used to be nothing at Surfers Paradise....
so you use an internet forum to froth over conditions and discuss the best times to go to gnaraloo, then on the same forum you express surprise that the place has been ruined by crowds?
Hi Stamp,
I don't think you'll find a single post where I am frothing on conditions urging others to come and get some. When it comes to Gnaraloo I am usually trying to deter most people who plan to kite there withinn their first year of kite surfing, as it isn't the place to kite if you aren't playing an "A" game. Of the 5 kiters who were up there just recently, One trashed a board on the rock reef, the other tore his foot open on said same reef and this was with higher than normal tides and gentle breezes.
I mentioned nothing about crowds?!?!?!?!?
My point is most people go there to escape the technology that keeps us on the treadmill of consumerism. My post was as a reminder to Gboss that the people who go up North to Gnaraloo, the Bluff and several other places I won't mention, go there to escape society and the hustle and bustle, and try to re-establish a connection with the earth and sea and to re-awaken the true values in life that get swept aside by all encompassing commercialism and consumerism.
I know it won't make them any more money, but fixing the non working lights in the ammenities blocks could have had a higher priority than the coffee machine at the shop. ![]()
I think Gboss is doing a good job in general but I think he may be missing a fundamental point and the main attraction for most visitors.
DM
i actually meant that as a general comment to anybody discussing the place online , but here's a reminder of some recent froth-
www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Kitesurfing/General/Gnaraloo-4/?SearchTerms=gnaraloo
and i reckon anywhere with an amenities block is hardly getting away from it all or connecting with nature
Hmmm it's a hard one. Gnaraloo has been a hot topic since the early day's of tracks when they blabbed about it. It's not really secret but more remote. Gboss obviously paid good money for the station so has to pay for it and without a tourism minded owner the place would have dunny tickets spread every where. Then if you have a look at what DEC have planned when they grab the whole coast you will find a 5 star resort with a runway. (Ningaloo coastal strategy).
Maybe kiting needs to become like surfing where localism although a horrible word will be the saviour of many a spot but then lets not turn this topic into that argument as it will go on for pages.
One answer to all this would be if it's not in your post code your not welcome[}:)]
Any way this could go in circles for ever so I think I will go have a beer and forget about this bloody internet
DM i think you & a few others were lucky enough to enjoy the mid north coast before it was widely known. A special place was spoken about and a legend was born. Now we have the internet and it speaks to an ever increasing audience.
We all have to expect change. With an increasing population and increasing monetary pressures operators have to adapt or go out of business.
I have only been enjoying kiting and camping in WA for a few years but i am already fuming about losing one of my local camping spots to a new road and development.
Nothing stays the same, enjoy it while you can or manage it wisely and enjoy it forever.
Thats my easter message of goodwill
over and out.
lol the more I am on here the more I realise how smaller community us seabreeze uses are. Gibbo you know me I can't go to bed after one beer and as for the expo well it's the same as this time last year where I am thinking I can't be bothered but we will see later and the post code dig is only relevant in the surf for now ![]()
@ oceanfire I can see the irony from your point of view but believe me being a shop owner the consumerism of the kiting industry seems to become your life and makes it even more important to get away from it all.
@stamp you just gota get back over here before the coastal management strategy is implemented.
@Dm red thumbed- thats gota be a first.![]()
@paul1 never like the gold coast buddy. were not full of queenslanders![]()
@sbd long time mate I know WA is wait awhile but 13 years![]()
@weta have a great Easter mate and will see you when the wind blows
oh and waveslave what no dude man
Scotty i think you forgot to say goodnight to Jim Bob & Sue allen..... and Dusta (he's in the can!! just received the December issue of KBM) ![]()
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Wot a load of blks, sitting there sipping lattA and drinking piss at the shop at extortionate prices, when you can do it at half the price at ya own camp,,,,
,but I tell ya, gone are the days when ya cauld do the dance of the flaming arse holes arround the camp fire without being told to shut the fk up,,,,,,,.Its days are numberd as far as remotness goes, and to compare is like looking back to the Sullivans,,,,Darliks walking arround at night shining in ya face not knowing what a kerro tinnie is all to common up there these days, and to be frank, is very fkn rude,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,standing here in my allocated spot in the big smoke,i will choose my time wisly to avoid the travling circus.......
Paradise found is paradise lost.
Enjoy while you can, it may take a 100 years but it is only a matter of time. A fact of life.
Best we can hope for is to keep things quiet and delay the onslaught!![]()
Like OMG I had to drink non-low carb beer, I had a shower in salt water, and there was no Sumo Salad at Gnaraloo.
I like so want my money back.
its unfortunate these things are inevitable
there is a massive expanse of coast between here and there, surely there are other spots
^^^^^^^read em weep boys there is no stopping it....have a look at just about every well known global surf spot (sorry but gnarloo is no secret) in the last 20 years and you will find the same thing has happened...starts off remote...hard to get to....zilch amenities...pristine beauty....then bit by bit progress (for want of a better word) takes hold....next thing you know you can sip a lat'e after your epic session....fist time I went to bali you could not get a cold drink at Ulu's...there were no wurungs at all....I said to Made (one of the young girls selling drinks)...I cant drink this you need to get some ice...next day she struts up to me with a huge grin and says..."you want COLD drink"...opens her little esky and they are all sitting in ice....5K walk to the nearest road.....progress started.......make the most of it now it's all inevitable.
Hey Scottie
I'll get back to you on that one, i think theres been a few changes.
Talk about change,I'm up to my goolies dealing with Wedge Island at the mo'.
Another big day dealing with @#cken bogans..
Bring on the end of Easter
i dont think yuppies are the problem i think its cashed up bogans.the kind of expansion wa needs (and it does need it) is sympathetic and eco friendly and well policed. These type of places need more of us with a concience to visit them, and be more active in there development. Not just to moan about the inevitable expansion of such glorious places.I hate talk of exclusivness it stinks of middle class hippie.
Its just such a shame that we have no good wave spots from Perth to Gnarloo and the next stop is Exmouth. On a coastline this big its a shame theres no other accessable spots to get to it you really want to get away from it all.
Gnarloo in 50 years, "hey boss, you want beer, massage"? I hope we are the ones on holidays and not the staff.
"no make it a flat white"
who gives a flying f%^#
all good i reckon,
not sure what i am, no yuppie thou
whats wrong with internet, friendly helpful shop staff
a freezer to put your catch in or power for the fridge
can check news, do some work, ring the family etc
most still arent going to go there, too far etc
DEC changes more worrying, cape range good example
HeHe.....i'm smiling again......
You know i read this and i can't resist commenting but.........could you not of put this thread on after Easter......i've done over 120hrs in the past 7 days and i'm going to bed cause i need my beauty sleep!!
I will be back to this though because there is a lot of good content that does need addressed in the replies you got AKS. In paticular those relating to the Carnarvon to Exmouth strategy which may be used to determine the future of many places between Carnarvon and Exmouth the one i am concerned about is Gnaraloo, and i have been fighting hard and not making many friends in the political forms to try and retain what we all consider, in our own personal way,Gnaraloo to be.
As for the offensive Latte's...........in your own words...."I know you don't have to partake in those things if you don't want to (and I didn't), and please explain how being able to have a good coffee..........
Makes 3 Mile Camp less remote...I drove to town and back today to check and i did the same amount of Km as i did before we got the coffee machine.
And...........
The next time you are here and your meant to go home the day before a 4meter swell and 30 knot SWesterly and your wife lets you stay because she can have a latte and email the kids .....you'll thank me.
