I've heard lots about the Luncay for flatwater but wondered if anyone had any experience with one in chop and surf?
I demo'd a 132 misfit recently in really choppy conditions and spent half the time clearing spray out of my eyes and the other half letting my knees recover from the intensly bumpy ride.
Any thoughts on whether the Lunacy will be any different ?
The lunacy will be a lot worse for both spray and your knees.
i rode one for a season and its awsome for flat watter and small chop, any more than that it is easy to catch a edge and you would have to add swallowing lots of salt watter to your list as it will happens that quick you wont have time to think to close your mouth.
I do like the lunacy and stilll have it but really only for flat watter.
Its a dedicated wake style board - flat and stiff for maximum pop. If you want something for eating up the chop then you will require some rocker and perhaps a little extra length.
Its also about your riding ability I ride a 132 in the ocean chop thru to butter smooth slicks and I cope. Its nto the smoothest ride but you learn to adjust your edging and weight distribution etc. I love my board but me knees are cursing me all the way to rehab.
If your riding slicks most of the time then go for it! The pop is sick and addictive.
I also think a lot of the boards that are good in chop are more flexible, but you do hear of them breaking ocasionally.
I have never heard of a lunacy break!
Its one of those boards that you will have forever.
Was out in the lake today with 30 to 35kn, and had fun, sure there was water splashing around, but in those kinda conditions you can't expect a smooth experiance.

I ride a 09 129 and find I get sprayed quite a bit in chop - no trouble catching edges though. Great for flat water, I would look at another board if you're going to be riding chop a bit.
The Lunacy 2009 caused a bit of trouble in choppy water. Since the tips of the 2010 Lunacy go up a bit that's not a problem any longer. However the Lunacy is still a new school board and there are definitely softer boards out there. Still though, I love my Lunacy 132..
Had the 129 from 08 and am riding the 132 from 09 at the moment. I compared my old 129 to the newer 132 and they had the same rocker line but due to a touch more length the 132 had a bit more rocker at the tips. I think this helps in the chop. That said the square tips can catch, and the fin position means that the front fin catches and sprays -especially the standard fins. I am now using 0.75" fins on my lunacy and it's reduced this issue as well as being better all round for me.
I have used the Luncay in flat, chop and waves. it excels in flat as everyone has said. In chop it is OK, can still ride powered and fast but its not for the lazy rider. You need to keep an eye on your line. It can carve on a big bit of swell but needs a lot of back foot pressure. It's fine in waves it you are blasting out and jumping and wanting to do a turn on a wave - same thing with back foot. If the conditions are good for waveriding I'd want to be on a surfboard anyway.
Last thing I find it likes to be ridden fast and edged. No poo stance.

We don't have much flat water nearby, but a fair bit of small swell (3-5 ft). I am starting to do some basic unhooked tricks and am working up to handle passes. I haven't heard this asked before but is there a best/ better board for doing basic unhooked tricks in the waves?
