Yesterday I had my most enjoyable session of this season, on the most unlikely of gear and most unlikely conditions. This backs up my reasoning that you cannot pigeon hole gear or styles.
Wind conditions were cross on, 8-12 knots. Board was 2010 North Race LTD with light wind, big fin set. Kite was Ozone 17m Zephyr and swell of ~ 3m at Little Island.
I chose the gear combination because Little Island is 1km upwind and 3km out off the beach and anything else wouldn't have got me out there. I went out for a look.
Once there, the sets were excellent at around 6 foot, water was clean and smooth due to light wind, and although my board choice was less than ideal for wave riding, my kite was less than ideal for wave kiting and the wind speed was less than ideal for wave riding, I caught about 25 waves in the two hours I was out, and had an awesome time rewriting my thoughts on wave kiting. 
By the end of the session, the wind had picked up to about 12-14 knots and I was joined by John on a Zephyr and a Sector 60 Airush board. Greenroom was also out paddling in, enjoying the conditions. With practice I surprised myself with what was achievable on the gear I had, and like I said, maxxed out my fun meter. An unlikely and unexpected Gem in an otherwise ordinary day. It's not about the gear, it's what you do with it! 
Apparently there were a few nay sayers on the beach saying the Zephyr is too big and doesn't turn (hadn't demo'd one). Apparently they went home without going kiting LOL.
Sick session! Just loved it! And got my tick as the session of the season for me.

Ahh thats who it was.
I went for a late arvo/sunset bike ride along the coast instead of a kite because the wind was too light even for my lightwind gear (even though I have a 14mtr and a 6'2" surfboard).
I spotted a couple of kites out near the island and thought how could they be kiting in waves in these conditions..... now I understand.
Dont really agree with your statement though

sometimes it's all about the size of your equipment.
make the most of it while you (and others) can.. you may not enjoy too many more sessions like that kitehard if you continue too tell all about it on this forum, by all means tell everyone how much fun you had but for others sake there is no need to mention spots.. i know its hardly a secret , the less that know the better.

sounds like alot of fun, nice work,
even (unlikely but possible) an element of risk for a long swim home...just for good measure!
