Had an pretty nice session today with a mate from out of town down this coast...
We were kiting up and down the big open beach located N/East of the "A" marker on this pic.

About 30 mins in we noticed the Westpac rescue chopper buzz past us, then back, then back again, scanning our section of the of the coast, within about a 5km radius of where we were kiting.

Signaled to mate, not much we could do, seemed they were searching for something. Didn't feel sharky at the time, so kept kiting.

Another 10 mins later the Westapc chopper was joined by the Police rescue chopper.

Both choppers doing a search around the same area. Figured out something was going on, looked up to chopper and they signaled us in.

We kited to the beach, landed our kites and headed over to where the Police chopper had since landed on the beach right next to us.

Search & rescue cop came down out of chopper and came and told us that they were searching for a kiter who had taken off from Split Creek Beach, just west of Split Creek Lighthouse, or mark "A" on above pic.

They said that missing kiter was on a Black and White kite and was said to of taken a heavy fall, not resurfaced, then washed around corner.

So whoever it was rang the police, reported it, then search had begun.

We told them we didn't see any kites upwind of us, or anyone drifting past out the back.

More cops came down from the beach, taking note of cars and gear etc and said they were doing the same within the search radius.

Anyways, if anyone knows anything, or is possibly the "missing" kiter, please contact relevant authorities with info.

It's great to have such a fantastic service like the Westpac chopper, and great that people are looking out for each other.

Hope missing kiter is found & ok.

Cheers

Ricketts Point is a long way from Aireys Inlet though, nothing in the mainstream media about it yet.

Was at juc and chopper followed me around for ages. I was spooked because I thought was shark. Kept kiting though! Epic conditions last two days

As Peter points out - Rickets point is a long way from aireys inlet.

Are we sure they are the same?

Didn't notice any choppers flying around out at Rickets, would have been in my line of sight each run out from Edithvale.

As per Matto and Peter, huge difference between locations......

^^ Hope not too, it might slow down the response when someone does need help...

Just spoke to the Vic Water Police - incident appears to have been resolved as there is no ongoing search today. Will put up further details if/when available.

All over boys.
Family called it in when they should have checked the beach first.

Why was your original thread titled - kiter lost at Rickets point? if it was actually near aireys inlet?

'Cos the family called it in with no idea of the location let alone anything and good time was spent in the air, by TWO helicopters while the family should have walked down on the beach and found the brother or something packed up on the beach not floating out to sea like they had thought..

Makes us look good.

Peace bro.

Thanks for the clarification.

Amazing.

So were the choppers at Rickets, Aireys or both (Definitely at aireys, based on doonas report).
