Been wanting to experience kiting at night for sometime now, but conditions have not been quite right.
Have been having reasonable wind throughout the night into the early morning.
Conditions were perfect for a night kite early this morning.
Got out on the water at 04:30, cloud cover, no moon, no stars, minimal light.
What a surreal experience! Was so dark that one could not see the chop, could not see the surface of the water.
Kiting by feel is different. Cautious initially and gaining confidence as first light began to illuminate the sky and water.

Recommend 2 glow sticks for kite and 1 for board.
If sharks concern you, do not do it.

Just for the unknowing before you go night kiting:

Are sharks attracted to light?

Any water activity at night/in the dark is dangerous. Shark feeding time is generally dawn and dusk, but in the dark you can not see potential dangers. Sharks are attracted to blood, noise/splashing (they can be anyway), shiny objects (stuff that in water my look like scales of a fish) they are potentially attracted to light

Well done mate!

I've found the peacefulness of night kiting surreal. Difficult to take photos of your kite from the shore tho:(

When fishing around Steep Point / Quobba we used to have high power flood lights on the water at night to attract certain things (yellow tail kings loved this!) and while we saw the occasional shark it was not anywhere near as many as during the day. Perhaps thats due to more pelagic action during the day?

I think a couple of small glow sticks probably wouldn't attract anything too bitey

We always go for a little night paddle when the swells in at the groin in Gero in front of dome. Set the generator up an 500w flood light - good fun. Last time was 15th march

I had a great night kiting session about 4 yrs ago in Brighton UK under a full moon. amazing flat water due to low tide and the light from the sea front and the moon was good. Finding your board was a pain. Plus no sharks

Congrats to the night time swimming duo and triple crossing from the WA coast to the Rottnest island yesterday, which took 18 hours to complete!

That's the sport and spirit!

BTW For the previous crossing they forgotten the Shark shield which proves a thing or two:)
