Why'd ya go and spoil a perfectly good sculpture by putting newspaper all over it?
And all those negative words?
Bleak.
It was the best for me. The wood work was so sexy and done with such love and gentleness, while the newspaper on the outside with all the crap of the world made such a great contrast for thought................brilliant Ian.
There is so much of you in it.
This reminded me of a weathered shell and of having marvelled at how incredible nature is to create such functional and complex, not to mention beautiful things. As well as wondering at the human capacity to appreciate such things. I guess it's possibly meant to represent a DNA helix thingy too.
It just seems such a shame to create something of beauty and then defile it just to remind us what a blight the human race is upon the earth. Like we're not reminded of it often enough! And now with a couple of billion Chinese and Indians about to enter the consumption free for all - that we've been on for the last 60 years - things are looking even bleaker.
:-) So glad to see that many get my intended message - contrast between the inner and the outer: DNA helix, global unravelling on all fronts: environmental, economical, ethical, personal, social ...
Those who know me, know that I'm not a Greenie nor a negative person ... BUT the reality is that we clearly do NOT think enough about what we are doing to the planet and to each other.
I have seen too much of the world to understand that if we don't CHANGE, nature will turn us unto each other anyway - I don't want that for my kids - my sculpture is one of the few ways I fell that I can try and make a difference ... so what are YOU doing to make a difference?
The 30 inner timber spiral supports were ceiling beams recycled from my old Scarborough home. Each timber radial was individually hand carved and inspired by the natural beauty that surrounds us.
The outer banner, made from recycled cardboard & newsprint, was deliberately left deteriorated, warped and unravelling ... inspired by the book by "Collapse" Jared Diamond en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jared_Diamond which details the history of how many civilizations have driven themselves knowingly into complete extinction!
So why do we individually & collectively continually make decisions that we KNOW are bad for us individually and for the societies in which we belong???
It's a really nice piece Ian. Complex, curved woodwork is one of my favorite media. Well done.
...true artist is the one who can bring you closer to truth by awakening a sense of beauty in you.....but you need to be soft and sensitive to see it...
..even if truth looks desturbing, you will more likely to see it clearly in the light of that awakened sense of beauty in you....
....beauty is revealing itself every time you go kiting on the ocean....even though the ocean is actually dieing.....
Nice work - and it was also good to see that the local post photographer liked it.
If being a greenie means that you might be able to sing and play the traingle while chained upside down to a tree (?), maybe we need to become blueies.

sorry, just IMO. Great exhivition though, love the flags, could do with them in my back yard.
I love it :) I love the mix of beautiful wood work mixed with harsh paper cuttings.. It's like in the center we are all good people who care but we are also consumers and materialistic who will do anything to make a buck without thinking about the detriment that its making on ourselves and our planet
