I'm “noo” to the sport this being my first full season (wind permitting).
Three lessons at the end of last season, a refresher at the start of this season and a dozen times out by myself.
After reading a couple of “heated forums” ie Pinerooted & Beginners at Safety Bay I'd like someone to please explain to me the need to kite in flat water.
I've driven past “The Pond” a couple of times and wouldn't personally kite there because it looks too busy and I don't want the hassle of trying to stay out peoples way while trying to get in some valuable time.
Personally I just want to get out there and not have to worry about anyone else and do my own thing. I'm hoping to spend some time the other side where the kite school is during my time off over Christmas.
Why do “the Pros” kite at the Pond?
Jonopark, I'm still trying to understand in regard to “Pinerooted” what you mean. I don't understand where you are in relation to the people turning.
Are the kiters heading out then turning back to shore in front of you?
Can someone “PLEASE EXPLAIN!!!!”
Cheers
G
Haha it was a frustrating day that day and I got a little heated. Pineroo is a great place to learn. Pond probably not (definetley not). All I ask if you kite at pineroo (and everyone is friendly (believe it or not including me) try stay upwind of people jumping. If you struggle to stay up wind that's no problem as you will be flushed through soon enough. Start south and try stay that side. Also if someones coming in, wait until they pass and it's clear before turning, this creates a "circuit") (just like a car, if someone is traveling down the road wait till they pass before you do a u turn other wise you block them). Other than that (it's really that simple!) have fun!!! Oh and wAtch out for Jason (new kites) he carries 2 butterfly knives and a hammer each session. Bad kid that one! (jokes!)
You're right that the Pond can be very busy, can get quite tricky to get into the circuit and if you do stack it can create all sorts of Hassles.
That being said, there is no problem with kiting on the other side of the spit, a bit more wave and chop action but plenty of room to play.
Personally I mostly kite around the corner at Penguin Island, nowhere near as busy as the pond and with only a small amount of wave action. You can also play in the bigger swell around the Islands to change it up a bit. People are pretty friendly there, I've had a few tow ins when I've had gear failures
flat water is more fun than chop. its easier to go fast load and pop and jump big compared to chop.
Thats why the freestyle guys will look for flat water.
waves on the other hand alot more fun than flat water.!!!.
it's also easier for beginners to ride on glassy flat water. as a beginner you tend to loose your edge in choppy waters and you end up getting dragged downwind after you've tried so hard to stay upwind ![]()
Rick I'm sure your trolling (previous posts) or maybe a little special. But anyway we are all god children. (even you Rick) go there and you will see. Study the water before you go in and you will see where 80% of people boost/ unhook. Yes you must check downwind before you jump. And you must also not stick the fork in the toaster rick But if people don't cut in front of you when approaching the shore (read first post) there should be plenty of room for people to jump! If your learning (as he is) I don't think he will be jumping 80m and causing to much havoc.
hahaha that was a good response jono
i would also add that if you can't tell from watching a kiters kite and edging that he is about to boost, you should probably be kiting well away from areas where the majority of guys are doing unhooked moves and large jumps etc anyways.
Can't understand what all this fuss is about, that penguin island side seems great and there is space to burn....kiting circuits are not my cup of tea and if people relatively new to the sport are kindly shown that they can experience freedom and fun without the dramas, they would probably choose option b) as well.
hope things work out down that way for the freestyle enthusiasts though.
ps. i know some consultants who have been trying to get catherine point groyne extended... if we could get them to increase the scope by 100m or so we would have a new alternative to the pond and woodies imo - will see what i can do!

what about.... dont jump when there are people downwind of you?
How are people supposed to know when someone is gonna start jumping? it is the jumper that needs to plan his jump correctly. it is in no way the person downwinds fault if the jumper can't jump because there is someone downwind of him.
That's why we ask you to try stay out of the way from people jumping. So there is space downwind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The light globe just lit up?? I hope so!! If people are continuously in the way (turning in front of you) you cannot jump/unhook. Can I make this simpler? Drawing needed? Demonstration with muppets (I know where one is) repeating this simple fact over and over isn't working! Aah! I'm off the ciggies and on here too much last post!
yep the jumper needs to look downwind... if there is someone close by downwind, don't jump... clear enough I reckon. Just wait a bit and then do your jump. ![]()
