Kiting a few years in Scarb, taking into account the dominant South West wind, I always find myself surfing the waves on my back hand and always marvelled at the carving power of the goofies slicing the same waves.

Well, we had quite a few North Westerly lately and unfortunately my awe at your awesome skills has decreased greatly

It is sooooo much easier surfing on your natural side and the kite always appear to pull you back on your feet whenever you push too far on that tail slide.

Overall, this is (for me) better fun but mainly way easier to look like you are shreading.

Is there many naturals riding in switch stence in the South West wind for that reason????

I may have to practice this one this summer.

Luckily, there shuld be plenty of time to practice in the next few months

Does that mean you no longer "respect my awesome skills".

Dammit!

Switch stance sounds so much better than goofy.... so I am!

I'm glad it sounds like you had a good sess anyway.

yep so much easier on your forehand, surfing down wind, for cutties, reo's etc

main thing IMO is when hooked in (most are), is how/where your chicken loop sits versus kite when doing cutties or reo's - backhand going down wind on the SWer you are rotating away from the kite which restricts the rotation of a good backhand reo - you really have to send the kite in front of you just before rotation for any success...

The goofies on the same wave/wind do a cutty and the rotation opens up to the power source/kite... and they dont have to worry so much about kite posi either, just leave it up there and wack!!

On a surfboard Im not into riding switch, just cant do it well enough after so many years surfing regular, tried but not worth the effort for me. I would just like my backhand game to lift to a new level. Unhooking is probably the key.

Interesting to watch Ian Aldredge and Bear Karry and their backhand attack - new posibilities for the natural crew this summer??

Hi Guys,

I'm natural and ride backhand most of the time unless in NW. I also ride switch from time to time when conditions are small to medium although I rode one or two waves switch in yesterdays conditions, however, if the surf is big and has repercussions for mistakes I tend to, as a general rule, stay switch and can smack it fairly hard backhand.

I'm happy with my backhand but enjoy the challenge of goofy riding in SW, so I practice from time to time to change it up.

its got me buggered how many people who learn to surf in WA learn with natural stance, i reckon your sensei must have had alterior motives because its 90% goofy goodness here. Being taught to surf natural in WA is like being taught to be left handed from birth which IMO is bordering on cruel and unusuall, unless one just naturally feels comfortable doing things the hard way from day 1

Sir TOAD for example, made the kite stance switch from natural to goofy, never heard so many "yeeeoooowww"'s in one downwinder session, he went from kiddy carves to cutties that displace whole oceans and change tides in a few hours and went from this to this

cmon sou wester!

Looks like we may see an invasion of goofies at the local this summer

I may adopt a poo stance (due to the unatural stance) but I intend on displacing some serious spray on my carves

you can ride "switch" being regular or goofy...switch just means riding your non preferred stance.

What can you do switch skating? Just curious as its on another level compared to kiting switch (which hardly feels much different, or sometimes easier).

p.s. Some of my best wave sessions have been backhand, I actually like it, it feels more like you're surfing the wave and less like your get pulled around a lump of water.

Thats what I always thought , but there seems to be some confusion to what switch actually means.

Probably some guys on here think switch is Saturday night when they chuck their keys in and end up with someone elses wife.

Just heard it was nw yesterday and I here it was a good swell too. Bl**^# seabreeze said there wasn't going to be any wind so thought I would get some work done (didn't really have choice). It is lucky to happen a couple of times a year and I blew it. You east coasters don't know how good you got it.

i normally ride heelside coming in on a south westerly in perth then swap my feet around just before taking off on the wave to go left on my backhand . most times fine but then usually on the wave of the session my feet get tangled doing the feet shuffle and miss that wave. its nice to mix it up and go switch, left as a goofy, without having to do the swap feet shuffle. yeah i know i could come in toeside but i go back to heelside to tack up wind and it saves the leg muscles

your right, hell its good on a righthanders for natural footers.

Wow thats pretty impressive all switch! Yes ramp is easier than street switch butits still hard! You're a lot better than me at it by the sounds of things. I can only muster up the odd switch heel flip or shove-it type tricks.
