Hi there!

I've been invited to rainbow beach tomorrow and the day after. Ofcourse I checked whether there was a kitespot with the wind being up and all, and yes! There seems to be one! Does anyone has experience kiting here? I could need all the ins and outs I can get. Is tide an issue here, what about current and how is the launching area etc?

And also, as I do not have a 4x4 car and I seem to need one here, is anyone planning on going there tomorrow who can give me a lift onto the beach with my gear? That would save me a hike!

Cheers, Eve

I was there on sat and it was awsome!

You do need a 4x4 or you'll be walking for hours. It a chest deep lagoon at the southern end of rainbow beach, which is glassy calm because the sand bar stops the turquoise water from getting chopped up. You can also kite on the ocean side if you like a bit of surf. 1-2 klm rides if you want!!

I wish i going up there again.

Good luck.

If you don't have access to a 4x4 you can kite north of the flags (100+m), best not to go south of the flags as you will have to contend with 4x4's driving along the beach. The best spot is the one orynoco was referring to. This is at double island point, the lagoon is north side. You need a 4x4 to access this though, as it is south of rainbow.

Hope this helps.

I was up there on saturday aswell but i won't ever go again.
its a haven for great white and tiger sharks but this time i actually saw a few. It was also very unusual to see Irukandji (box jellyfish) in the bay aswell, so kite at your own risk.
And you need to ask the local indigenous people (gubbi gubbi) if you can use their beach or they set their dingoes onto you.
Good luck

I live at tin can bay.

Actually scrap the 4wd just give me some freelines with a trainer kite. I saw this old guy doing it once at bondi can't quite recall his name...andrew...adrian..adam? doesn't matter anyway, seems like a viable mode of transport.

I went up on sat as well. Lets not forget the bacteria in the water that sends you blind and makes your hair fall out! Double is definately somewhere to steer clear of. Boy I'm glad that the local tribe has limited access or it would be that crowded all the time.

What about that big sea snake that sticks his head out of the water to check you out. Gess he would have been out numbered.

there is no wind because its 6:30 am in the morning as high tide was at 9 am and you can't drive on high tide.
So we waited for an hour for that cloud you can see in the picture to clear then it blew 20 knots for the rest of the day
I had my underwater video camera on while kiting when it was blowing i'll try and upload that
