I see. And I thought the kiteboarding community looked out for each other. Having never been a teenage grommet, I forget the territorial nature of any surf-related activity. I was just looking for some safety tips such as 'watch out for the gusts caused by the sand dunes at Woodies/Safety Bay/Pinaroo Point', or anywhere else. Perhaps a few post-trauma screams of or 'never go there!' in a SE'ly would have been useful before I drove myself miles to find a site is lethal. Pity people should assume that they should have control over PUBLIC spaces. The sea and wind is to share and if it's crowded just f**%$#g relax and go down or upwind 100 yards. Better still, pack up, go home and give the rest of us some space. After all, you could be at work or school. A bad day kiting is better than, well, just about anything other than stuff which if I wrote about now would really make this a "Forum" page, if you know what I mean.

Chill out.. Even seabreezes are gusty. Everytime it looks like going east someone posts where do i kite..Obviously its offshore and can sometimes go ENE.

kiting has been banned by all local councils for this weekend and every weekend till the sun stops shining and the wind stops blowing after that you can go out at Point Walter, watch for rocks rhs, the river is big enuf for all, go out in the middle and jump boats people love to see that

Mr Kutcher kinda hit the nail on the head - access to perth metro spots are on borrowed time and there willl be more and more kiters there each year.

I used to live on Cantray street and had the same after work options. Melville or lucky bay in a SW attracts a certain type of kiter.
1) Kites fly efficiently in clean wind, in turbulent wind your wind window shrinks and expands. And wherever you fly a kite on no matter what wind direction the wind on the river will always be turbulent due to the surrounding buildings, hills, and trees. Many people that kite at melville, know how to fly a kite but have no idea WHY it flies.
2) Many kiters at melville are not experienced water users, as they like the shallow water.
3)Because of the turbulent wind, there are only about 10 kiters who understand apparent wind theory and can always ride upwind. the rest do the walk of shame.
4) Because of all of the above some will be lazy and want to walk in ankle deep water, and have their kites around trees and the road. Walk in knee deep water and you are then using safe kiting guidelines, ALLOW 2X your line length as a MINIMUM SAFE distance.
5) WAKSA has spent so much time and effort,(I know of at least 3 occasions) to keep melville open, and a former member spent a lot of his own money on those bouys. THAT is minimum safe distance.

Melville is crowded. Many guys will never get better if they only kite there. Learning any tricks, especially unhooked tricks is useless at Melville, how are you going to effectively learn when the wind range is + or - 8 knots at any given time???? Learn to relaunch well, know how to self rescue, know how to pull your safety and self land your kite and move on.....

Came to Perth this week for work with my kite gear... Loved the late arvo session on your flat water with southernly wind...
Wish it was the same on Saturday as this is my only day off in Perth before to head back to Sydney.
If anyone feel like giving a tip to a non local who is keen to discover what Perth has to offer on Saturday please send me a text 0424755079. Flat water preferred as I don't have my surfboard but anywhere good and not off shore will keep me happy
