Hey guys
Can anyone tell me if the sandbanks just inside of Morton/ North Straddie are any good in a S/SE.

Which bars are you talkin about dude? Unless your already going to be out there - I'd just stay on the mainland - there's plenty of good spots around here in a SE'er
They are just inside the gap between Morton and North Straddie. Been fishing around there a bit, but wind was not blowing. Seems like a sweet spot to kite just not sure about the S/SE.

BIG, fast moving tidal flows in there mate. be sure you have a boat for any potential rescues. This is an extremely dangerous piece of water, particularly if there's a 9 knot current flowing out through the shallows there. Lots of big sharks in that area too, trust me on that one 
i've done it with my brother (windsurfer) in a big south easterly and it was good fun, big flat water sections that lead into kickers for boosting, but be extremely careful kiting there, not a place for the faint hearted. in a big southerly blow it gets very gnarly.

Yeah Chris, Jumpinpin is the go. Rainbow Passage is death on a stick. Stay clear the bullies are hungry all year round.

Gusty dangerous stuff if you ask me!!!, maybe even offshore, don't venture there
Errr.... are you guys talking about the south end of straddie? Because the piece of water between NORTH stradbroke and the southern tip of moreton is not a nice piece of water. I think you have your places mixed up.....
look at the fotos macguyver and ask yourself if you can see the moreton sandhills.
ummm.... the whole of moreton is covered in sand dunes. the photos look like jumpinpin to me, which is at the southern end of moreton. the original poster was asking about the piece of water between north stradbroke and the southern tip of moreton. maybe some geography lessons are needed?

Yes their are but dependant on tide.
You need to look more towards the bottom end of Moreton on Google and you should see some nice sand banks.
on low tide those sand banks are sick for learning the art of getting a full body sand papering
it was the 3rd or 4th time i had flown a kite and it was amazing the amount of space i had to f@ck up with as i was learning with a 19m fuel...lol...

Not sure I'd make the trip out there in a SE/SSE. But SW is magic. So clean compared to Wello. After all, it's 25km or so since it left land by the time it gets to the southern end of Moreton.
The sandbank that runs off the southern end of Crab Island is magic. The channel (Day's Gutter) is about 200m wide. No doubt there are plenty of bities in there, but I've only seen one juvenile (0.5m) in probably 30 or more visits. It's not like the Rainbow Channel in that regard. The channel isn't that deep (around 5m) and doesn't lead anywhere - not far inside Crab the channel disappears. My boat draws about 40cm and I can't get through at low tide.
SW is the real pick of the breezes, especially since that's not usually much fun elsewhere. Slaloming through and boosting over the mangroves, crystal clear water, heaps of rays on the banks (which you can usually see easily) and for those big jumps when you don't want to land in shallow water, boost off the edge of the bank and land in the channel. One of the nice things about the sand bank is that it rises very slowly. So for most of the tide you can find shallow butter flat water somewhere - high tide it goes under so you get the chop coming over.
The picture is looking WSW from Kooringal (the little village on the southern end of Moreton) across Days Gutter to the sand bar that runs south from Crab Island then across Moreton Bay to Brisbane in the distance.

Those sandbanks look like they are near Amity.. you can see the beach where that girl got attacked by a shark and died on the beach in front of all her friends about 3 years ago in the background of one of the pics.
I remember it well as I was swimming at Peel island when it happened.
Spooky how Amity it has the same name as the town from the original Jaws.
