I wonder if more people saw under the surface would they treat the ocean the same way........

Anyone who dives can only be changed by what they see underwater. The fear of sharks especially gets put into perspective once you see them going through their daily routine and taking an active and integral part of the underwater ecosystem. Peter Benchley and the media have a lot to answer for, for their influence, distorting facts and conjuring fear in people of the water and the creatures in it.

Sharks are the "garbo's" of the underwater world. They remove the sick, the weak, and the old and ensure that only the strongest of species survive. You'll note how many large edible fish swim in very close proximity to sharks without fear of being eaten or display any concern.

The underwater world when viewed diving is a wonderful place and gives you a much stronger understanding of how important it really is, and how badly humans treat the oceans.

I'm no whack job greenie, but I care immensely for the ocean and it's inhabitants and certainly respect and appreciate it all.

That describes a lot of kiters that I know, including me! What do you have against old kiters? Are you trying to scare us?

It's a sad state of affairs when one feels compelled to issue a disclaimer prior to saying that you care for the environment. This is not a go at you Darren, but a reflection on a culture in which greenies have been portrayed as nutters to the extent that one doesn't want to be seen to care too much for fear of being stigmatised.

Some greenies are nutters, sure, but they are far outnumbered by highly qualified, thoughtful and sane people whose research and/or serious reflections lead them to the conclusion that you'd have to be a nutter not to care about biodiversity and habitat preservation.

How that care plays itself out in ordinary and extraordinary actions is a further question, but nobody should be ashamed simply for caring.

Well worth a watch, and a saddening thought that 15,000 more sharks will be wiped out in the hour it takes to watch “Shark Water”…. We really are “just a bunch of primates out of control!"
