There has been a number of sightings of large sharks off nobbies .The mutton birds are back in droves and the sharks are picking off the weak and dieing ones .Aparrently one jumped right out of the water next to one of the kiters.

There was a killer whale about 100 meters off the break wall at Stockton. It was feeding on the birds, or looked to be. I have never seen so many and reckon that that southerly stuffed them up as they are supposed to be heading south to King Island and S Victoria. The beach is littered with them and a small raft of them were still copping it this evening when i came home from work.

They are Shearwaters or mutton birds and migrate up to 6000ks from the north Pacific. By the time they get here they are pretty well knackered.

Sorry to be a bit slow, but killer whale? wtf? aren't we talking about orca's here? i thought those big bad babies hung out near the poles where there's icebergs and stuff floating around? how's one of them off stockton?

I have vague recollections of National Geographic doco's telling me those babies are the apex predators of the entire ocean - as ruthless as a great white but about 100 times smarter - mamals that communicate with there own and hunt collectivley etc, etc - what are the chances of coming across one of them when I'm body dragging out the back retrieving my board after another failed gybing attempt? and what's going to happen if I do come across one of them?

Sure as heck looked like one to me so I looked them up and yes they are seen on occasion, someone has even posted a video on U-Tube of them off Nobbies. When I saw this one it had a choice of surfers and training life guards but they were left alone.

Ok, have a look at the link below, note theses are NOT pictures from Saturday arvo at nobbys but as I searched to find out more about sharks jumping they are very close to what i saw over my left shoulder as i was on a run out.
Only about 4-5 feet long, couldnt pick what breed it was.
It was about 2m away, jumping and rolling to its right giving me a great view of it full belly.
I dont belive it was going for me more likely i scared it.
Most of the birds were feeding about 300m away but there were a few stray birds on the water, maybe it was going for one.

Cheers
Craig

Yep it could have been.

About 2 months I was up at fort scratchly (has a good view of stockton) and one of the volunteers had seen a pod of them earlier that day.
I did not believe him.
But then about 1 month ago on the news they showed a couple of Sydney somewhere, So I guess they are around.
