hi guys,

I have a mate who is keen to learn, i have taught him on my trainer kite and he has gone and bought a harness so i know he is keen ($$ where mouth is)
Im gonna teach him some body dragging then send him off to get a lesson, but as he is about to spend a load of cash on lessons, board, harness etc should i lend him my rarely used 9m core riot, he is 85kg (im 100kg so its my high wind kite for now) untill he can afford to buy a kite (maybe a month or so)
He is a good mate so if he trashes it so be it, im sure he will get it fixed or replaced, my question relates to whether that size would be suitable for his weight and for what wind range, we are locals to St Kilda/Brighton in Victoria.

I'm 85kg and yesterday I was so over powered with my 9m.

When I started my instructor used a 4m kite for my first body dragging lesson and I was flying with it cuz I turned the kite faster than I supposed to.

Leave the job to it's professionals, If something happens to your mate his family will never forgive you.

I had a phone call from a young lady yesterday who's room mate borrowed her kite to "Have a go" whilst she was out at work.

She came home to a destroyed kite and an apology. Even though that person may offer compensation, you're gonna be off the water until it gets sorted out which may take quite a while if they don't have the spare coin. If this is the case and it's your strong wind kite, be assured we will have two weeks of 25-30 knot winds and you'll miss the lot (murphy's law).

Alternatively, they get it repaired for $120, which drops the value of the kite by half what it was worth before the damage (devalued by $400).

Not great either way.

Cheers,

KH

oh yes he has every intention of getting a lesson, im just gonna body drag with him first so he gets that down pat before his lesson as the lesson imo should be used on safety and combining the kite and board, kite control (once the basic understanding is there) is something that just takes time and practice.

So my intention is for us both to wear a harness, then i will take him out in the water and he can hold on to the back of harness, show him how its done, then hand it over to him and ill hang on the back. So at no point will he be by himself.

Once thats done he will be off to get some lessons, once he has had a lesson, i will lend him my kite to use on his own.

Anyway, thats not my question, the question is what wind range would an 85kg rider get from a 9m core riot with a twin tip board say 140cm in St Kilda/Brighton?

Mate, make him have a lesson 1st! Must cover safety aspects before attaching a kite to him and letting him body drag.
If you reckon he has got the skillz after 1 lesson, then def let him borrow it if you are prepared for your kite to get trashed.
I reckon a 9m on a 85kg beginner rider will be good from about 17 knots to 25ish.
