if you rip away all of the prefixes, surfing will always be cooler than boarding.

no prefixes still makes the word boarding better.
kiteboarding includes all forms of kiting with a board, mountain board, snow board, surf board, wakeboard etc. Kitesurfing represents the water based disciplines within that biggger group.
You could argue that riding a twin tip on flat water is hardly "surfing". but you have to be able to differentiate the disciplines somehow.
Maybe we should call it waterboarding, but I think that has been banned by the geneva convention
My mum slipped up for the first time the other day, asked me if I'd been out windsurfing recently. 
ud find that alot of the 'board' sports use one another for influence and inspiration and use each other to grow though. eg kiting uses wake for tricks and ideas then takes them to their own unique level, i think wake borrowed from snow or skate for rails and so on... thus creating a community of joy sports instead of separate lame sports eg. rollerblading or rip sticking.

asked my windsurfin mate about kiteboarding vs kitesurfing
he said "why don't you do call it, poser dangle p00fs, and be done with it"
i said "that name is already taken by those who frequent woodies in w.a"
yeh, kiteboarding. Windsurfers have done damage to the surfing component of the name.
