I was practicing my transitions just up above the first groyne at Botany Bay today, wearing my spanking new Christmas present - my Seabreeze sunnies.

I came in close to shore riding toeside and pulled a downloop to start my transition, but I made the schoolboy error of not committing, looped over way too big a radius, got powered up and ate it very hard head first.

The impact ripped my sunnies of and I lost my board. I figured the sunnies would be close To the board, so I dragged back up to my board, and figured I would get up and then have a look for them.

Just as I strapped the board on some MotherF***er on a jet ski pulled up about 15 metres away, reached down into the water, pulled my sunnies out and put them on. I yelled out to him, he turned around, I pointed to my eyes to indicate that they were my sunnies, he looked at me for a couple of seconds and then just gasses it and headed off straight upwind.

To say I am unimpressed is an understatement - what a cock.

Up until then I was resigning myself to the loss of my sunnies on their first outing, but to have the happiness of seeing them found, then immediately the dissapointment of someone flogging them was really gutting.

Great session apart from that though, I thought it was never going to blow in sydney again!

For the record, they were great sunnies until someone ripped them off. Comfie, shed water well - excellent value - from my 45 minute test drive I highly recommend them!

If I was ever in even the slightest doubt that the world would be a better place without stinky noisy jet skis and the douchebags who ride them then this unfortunate tale has erased it.

That's incredibly bad form, even for a bottom-dwelling jet skier.

as a spectacle wearer (long time) I have had prescription lenses put into sunglass frames, so that is can see when in the water, over the years have found best way to attach then to your head is a shoe lace tied on one arm then around your head and tie off on other arm.
Have found this is better than fancy elastic type ones, that stretch when you face plant into the water at speed.

Just confirms that the most hated entity on the water have got to be anyone on a jet ski. The surf clubbies being the only exception.

I would have got his rego off the side of his jetski and then reported it to the cops. If it was 15m away, salvage rules don't apply so its theft, plain and simple.

Salvage rules do not apply in enclosed waters its a crime called theft by finding.

Moot point - I wasn't quick enough to get any details off the Jetski, apart from the fact that it was green. And that he was a cock.

Go to ebay and search for "surf goggles". There's any number of cheap sunglasses that will do the job.

You need to tie your sunnies onto the zip puller on your wetsuit or make a leash. You will lose them (hence the reason for buying cheap ones).

A headband by itself is almost useless. One good crash and your sunglasses will be gone. Floating sunglasses are also almost useless. If you get more than a couple of metres away in chop you will never find them again.

Sunglasses overall are pretty crap in the surf. They sit too close to your face and fog up and hold water next to your eyes etc etc etc.

The best things are purpose built surf goggles. They might look a bit gay but they work.

These are expensive but the best. www.kurtisusa.com/

These are much cheaper and work quite well but make you look like Fearless Fly. http://www.spexusa.com/home/ The yellow lenses are best because they keep out the glare and UV but you can see clearly well into dusk or under cloudy skies.

And yes, jet skiers should all be returned to the institution they escaped from.

Hey Clayton,

Sorry to hear year story - amazing .. at the risk of starting an avalanche of Jet Ski sunnie theft claims, I'll come to the party for you on this one & offer a free replacement pair.

Jet Ski's were are real pain down where I live - big mobs (i.e. 50) would come through and destroy the natural vibe. The local council saw fit to ban them from the area, so no more herds of noisy stink boats!

Merry Christmas!

Thanks Laurie - that is amazingly generous - have shot you a PM.

I think it brings to light what I was thinking while I was sitting there in the water looking stunned.

If it had have been another kiter, or a windsurfer, or a sailor, of a SUP rider, or pretty much anyone else in a similar sport, it never would have happened.

Sailors of all variety generally look out for each other, and even though there is some sometimes some aggro down at Brighton le Sands when it is busy, I know that if push comes to shove, there are probably 20+ people there who have my back if I get into trouble - sailing people are good people.

Powerboaters do not seem to have the same ethos - they are out there for themselves.

Thanks again for the generous offer, and the great community!

I thought this little poem by Michael Leunig was appropriate, Hargs!

Jet-ski person, selfish fink,
May your silly jet-ski sink.
May you hit a pile of rocks,
Oh hoonish, summer coastal pox.

Noisy smoking dickheadfoll,
On your loathsome leisure tool.
Give us all a jolly lark
And sink beside a hungry shark.

Scream as in its fangs you go,
Your last attention-seeking show.
While on the beach we all join in,
With "three cheers for the dorsal fin!"

Believe it or not, you were actually lucky. The "locals" on their jet skis in Botany Bay are real wankers.I met a bloke who had a similar incident at that beach, but the jet ski pissed off with his board!

If you take a stroll along the beach down at brighton, you are bound to come accros the same guys. On a nice sunny weekend, there will generally be 20 jet skis on the beach, while all the heros take it in turns showing off in front of each other.

Take a mate or two with you, look out for the same bloke (or his jetski), and you may get your sunnies back. At the very least, get his rego number and report him to the cops.
