What I thought was a slow leak turned into a fast one and i was in for a long self rescue at St k Saturday afternoon. Was in no distress (apart from being pissed of with the kite) but two kiters stopped to ask if i was go. Cheers guys good to see people looking out for each other.

To the guy who grabbed my board and took it to shore sat 23rd at St kilda you are a legend. Hard enough winding lines up trying to hang onto a board. I have helped a few people out in my time and it is good to see karma coming back.

PM me as I like to make sure this deed does not go unrewarded.

when in a situation of having to perform a self rescue or swimming your kite in, take your leash and conect to the grab handle or footstrap. Now u don't have to worry about it, it will just drift behind you.

unless you're Waveslave, then you wouldn't have a leash

what then connects you to the kite that you're winding in?

^^^^ what he said.

If you want to do this then carry a second leash to hook up to your board, as unattached kites move faster through the water than swimmers do!

In this situation I have found that when you start to wind your lines in, begin with a bias to one side if the kite... so begin winding the front and back lines on just one side about 2-3 times on the bar. Then gather up the others and continue. This seems to turn the kite side on to the wind resulting in easier winding in.

Your correct that you are no longer leashed to the kite. I guess you have to make a judgement call as to it is appropriate or not. eg is it too windy to try this or are there to many people downwind. I have had to swim in with a kite on several occasions and found leashing to my board really conveinient. Just last week I was 1/2 km from shore and the wind died, in that circumstance the method was safe. otherwise who knows if I would have got my board back?

why not just disconnect your leash thread it through a strap and reconnect onto the safety. On 5 line kites this is pretty easy to do.
