Here is the vid of the superkite Brazil event.
We will have a full story on this in our Xmas issue
Check out the mad arials of Alldredge and Rebstock
One guess where surf kite comps are heading looking at this vid, straplessssss! not a surfboard in sight with a strap on it, nice!
Hows the guy that switches as he comes in for landing, sik!
but if waveriding is trying to get closer to surfing then........ wheres the tweaked barrell rolls, and 'maaaad' ariels............ by the looks of things not far off ![]()
Okay might get a bit of abuse, but call me what u will, I need to ask this.
These guys who ride strapless in the vid are awesome, super talented and skilled and stylish, and the list goes on. Basically i respect them, so don't think im hating on them.
But when the guy says " I was so stoked to see all these guys out there looking like they didn't have a kite in their hands, looking they they would when they were surfing normally."
Again, i agree, super talented and all that. But if you want to keep pushing kitesurfing closer and closer to surfing, why not just surf? I personally ride a twin tip and i love all the super technical freestyle stuff. Hadlow, youri zoon, etc. And i do respect the other styles, but i also believe the fantastic thing about kitesurfing that separates it from normal surfing is that u have a kite. And this allows u to get massive and technical airs.... with straps.
I dunno, i just don't get why everyones trying to get so close to surfing and looking like there's no kite there, when they can just surf....? if u don't want to embrace the kite then don't have it at all?
Be nice.
@KB
i get what you're saying and agree to a point. love seeing a freerider on a twinnie smashing waves and throwing some powered loops, rolls, transitions etc with style and power that most strapless surfboard riders could not dream of...and the freestyle guys are technical beyond belief.
but i think the point of the current crop of guys is to harness kiting power with surfboard flow, and make it look seamless (ie that is what they mean by "its like they are just surfing"), and that is pretty sick to watch and the pinnacle i guess for anyone who comes from the a surfing background.
personally, i don't buy into the whole one is better than the other thing - ripping is ripping on whatever vehicle...and if i could boost like Len10, i would put the surfboard away quite often
.
I don't know if anyone else has made the connection but to me these guys make it look more like skateboarding than surfing, especially in that vid.
Didn't it look more like a skate park/skate comp than a surfing comp??????
Nothing wrong with this but am I the only one to see that this is where it's going. It's logical, if the waves are pumping then hit 'em, but if not then skate it up.
