Gday chasing some feeback from anyone who has successfully built a 2-3 board quiver used both for surfing and kiting.
I figure the following is required:
1. Small wave surfboard
2. Small wave strappless kiteboard
3. Good wave surfboard
4. Strapped kiteboard for hairy conditions
1 and 2 can be probably be combined. The only issue is probably volume - usually for paddling small surf you'd use a fishy shape with a bit of volume. Kite boards typically don't carry the volume as it's not required.
Not sure if 3 and 4 can be combined? Usually I would surf a 6'2" in good surf. Again a typical kite board would generally be smaller than this in all dimensions due to floatation not being an issue.
Obviously stength vs weight is another issue.
So is anyone getting away with kiting and paddling the same quiver?
Cheers
last time I went to school I worked out the counting thing 1,2,3,4 - but occasionally I would also do the 1,2,2,4 - used to confuse the hell out of my teacher !!
I dont count boards - conditions determine what is nice - small and mushy, big and hollow and then wind direction etc etc etc - I like your thinking ! ur not an accountant by any chance?
Lose the straps that way you only need two board for you requirements.
A production performance thruster the same size you surf and something else that will be fun to paddle surf when its small...
I think its bs to have a "small wave kite board".
Thats the idea of adding the kite... lol.
At the end of the day surfboards kite best. kite surfboards are terrible to surf (corky and skatey). But with performance surfboards comes light glass = more heel damage and chance of snappage. Equals more excuses for another new board.
Ebay is the spot for board shopping...![]()
I agree a performance board is probably going to get trashed kiting. Too heavy they end up pigs. You need to find your lower limits of height for paddle in at your weight and the maximum width of a board you are comfortable performance surfing on. The shorter boards with some nose width work well as they end up balanced under your feet. ie you don't have to put a foot on the nose or change stance much for punting. I like them with larger fins. Everything is a compromise though. There is no magic board; but there are a lot that are super fun to ride. My favourite atm is the new 5'6" Emery shoe for all round... or 5'4" MC for forehand kiting in small waves. The 5'10" mulcoy is a great all round shape. The square patterns under the wax is clear grip that I wax over that still gives you traction when your wax spreads.
5'4" x 18 1/2" MC Danny wills rippa model (kite only)
5'6" x 19" Emery Shoe model (Kite and lower limit of paddle in)
5'10" x 18 Tokoro strapped (kite only)
5'10" x 18 3/8" stretch Mulcoy (kite and surf)
6' x 18 1/4 TDZ (I prefer to kite only in big waves)
5' 11" x 18 1/2" Emery Arrow model (killer paddle shortboard thats too precious to kite)
My weight 76klg /Paddle custom epoxy kite surfboard with bamboo deck 6' x18w 2.5klg weight , but my kiting on this board has only been in light winds so far My 5'5" kite surf board same construction ,straped all conditions from 6m to 10m rebel kites
