No I am not kiting there, but sailing this week.

To the people who have sailed on it, Is there any effect from the tide as it comes and goes?

Would there be any benefit or otherwise from the tide in light winds.?

In short Yes
Sydney habour can be quite complex with tides flowing in channells and slack water behind Heads and island. Add oin the shifting and gusty wind due to surounding topograpy and you have a very fun and exciting place to race sail boats

HI wdric,

I used to race on the harbour as well as Botany Bay. As IanR said, the harbour and rivers have a pretty fair old current when the tide is in full swing. It's worth having a sail around the day before to see where you can get a lift and where you get knocked.

In light wind sailing, the home ground sailors will smash you. Follow the local guys and watch where they go, stick close as you can and don't go diving out into areas where others are hugging cliffs and bays. There is much local knowledge in play in racing in these tidal areas.

Good luck and enjoy the harbour.

Cheers,

KH

Thanks guys
Agreed the locals will be the ones to watch
Wont be able to sail the day before.

And the misses nearly broke her hand on Thursday so she needs all the rest before the series starts tomorrow

I am sure I will have plenty in front of me to watch anyway.
I used to sail a hobie 20yrs ago, but never a 16.
I entered us into the world masters
picked up a boat 2 weeks ago, so that was my first sail on a cat in 20yrs :)

will be interesting to see if its just like riding a bike

ric i raced hobie 16s for over 10 years. PM me if you need any race tuning ideas, there are heaps of things you can tweak on a 16 that make a lot of difference to boat speed.
