just back from sailing Bass Strait - Hobart to Eden.
for a NSW east coaster, i love those tassie winds- seabreeze Hobart and all the other sites say 15-20knts and just down the bay and around the corner, we're copping solid 30kts. Next day the same - way stronger than predicted. the next day we're gusting 40-45knts - radio Hobart who confirm forecast of 15-20knts.
sooo much prefer that to the usually disappointing east coast forecasts that under perform by 20-50%
I hear your grief - recently took a yacht from Port Phillip (Melb) to Gippy
Lakes and had quite vaiable winds (compared to the forecast!!) I guess you need to look at multiple sites to get a sense of what is likely to happen ??
So what were the 'other' sites you used? For off shore stuff I tend to rely on the BOM marine explorer (maybe I'm kidding myself also!!)

So solid 30 knots - thats big !! - 40 to 45 knots thats just not fun but you were sailing into a low pressure system?? did you have a kite on board to make it fun?? LOL
used seabreeze - local sites
weatherzone.com.au
buoyweather.com
and bom - interactive wind and sea pages -

all pretty much said same thing, and no low in sight in fact a large high sat over the straight, although a mate said he saw a mini-low ?? hit south Tas about the time we left
pretty sketchy being hit by 40knt + gusts just before you head out into Bass Strait. Trip itself all good
