Nearly everyone enjoys a good downwinder, every state would have some beauties.
Most kiters probably do their own local one every so often when the winds come in. We all know of the bass straight crossings and the kiwi that kited some of the south american coast.
Been thinking, Start in Augusta or Busso Finish up Gero way , january / feb, Kite and Camp! No Race, Stay in tight to the coast and Just cruise with the breeze as far as it takes you.
Without Planning / Training, wouldnt even consider it.
With Planning / Training, Do-Able? Im sure!
Yeah I did Gold Coast to Sydney on the Monkeykites Downwinder over 2 weeks - think that was 06
A lot of time spent pub hoping but when the wind was good - we got to kite some great places. Kited near some really hairy cliffs etc to, Just make sure you got a car to follow along the coast with a radio and take some coins to use a phone - You dont want to have equipment fail halfway and get stuck on some remote beach, or worse.
Its a great thing to do If you got the support to do it. :)
Sounds a goa, my bro and I would be in...(Live in Mandurah) - depending on dates. Would need to hit it at the start of a cycle. Yeh need to be organised, but not institutionalised! Keep it simple, keep it real, don't take all the adventure out of it!
Is this possible?
sounds like an adventure, i'm in
got a big house in margs for a start point if needed for crashers
will keep an eye on this topic![]()
Great idea.
Perhaps with a support crew or a rotation of kiters/drivers you could spread it out over several days. Lotsa tents, medical, food, gear etc to transport/set-up but would be a huge buzz I bet.
Good luck with it.![]()
sounds unreal. Hope you get it done can't wait to see the pics. Down winders rule, all the untouched flat water and surf spots. Definitely a trip of a life time.![]()
Sounds like a great way to spend a week or so..........
Rough calculations on google earth has it looking like a 500 nautical mile/926 Km trip from Augusta to Gero thats adding 25% for tacking
Would January produce the most consistent seabreeze??
Think you'd need to do a fair bit of planning; definitely sounds good.
you forgot about the sharks already... ![]()
now lets talk waterproof backpacks.... anyone know any gooduns?
Yeh jan is an interesting month, the further north, the less wind as the temp rises. Great for down south. Man even if we make it say lancelin / wedge be unreal, but yeh all the way to gero - ooh yeh - the only thing is... could we resist the outer reef breaks between lancelin and gero!!!!
Water proof backpacks, mmm backpacks with sealable bags inside. What size kites? Boards?
Awesome idea ![]()
Definitely agree about staying under the radar - the logistics of doing it officially would be horrendous (impossible). But that doesnt mean doing it without a heap of planning and all the backups in place. Kiting cant afford 'incidents' - official or otherwise.
Cars, boat, safety gear & medical backup. Pre-arranged campsites, daily supplies covered, contact nos etc etc. To do it well and make sure it was a positive outcome for all would take some organising.
Absolutely vital to establish a workable no. to be involved. Small group. Enough to make it work on both sides = several vehicles; boat support etc for manageable no. on the water.
Keen to be involved if anyone wants to get serious.
Definitely doable. Definitely awesome.
Im with puppet on this, keep it below the radar but with enough car + boat support for the #s of kiters.
Keen to be involved if anyone wants to get serious about planning something like this.
