We're planning a winter get away from Perth next year and want an alround option for non-kiters and children alike.
Anyone done either of these venues? Best time to go for kiting? Facilities etc?

phuket is no good for kiting. If want to go to thailand then hua hin is the place to go, but its season is the same as our summer. For winter stick to the southern hemisphere. From WA I think mauritus is a good option. I don't know how non kiter freindly cocos is.
I haven't been to Cocos for about 7 years but when I was there it was a pretty sleepy place, Other than the wind sports June to Aug (from Memory) there is fishing on charters and diving. For the wider family you can go to Home Island for a day and check out the history over there that is interesting but that was about it.
There was no shopping to speak of (co-op and small tourist shop)
There is a rough golf course (when there are no planes landing)
And riding a bike around can be fun to see the wildlife.
I personally loved the place, but would not take a young family there that was expecting a overseas holiday, as opposed to a flashed up camping trip.
Phuket sucks for kiting.. If there is ANY wind it'll be at Friendship beach or Rawai beach. Hit up the local kite shop at Friendship. Great bunch of people.
I just got back from cocos. We had awesome wind for 9/10 days and it was epic but there is very little to do for non kiters unless they are happy to snorkel/dive/chill out all day.
Thailand is more of a 'holiday destination' with some kiting if you're lucky.
Dec-Feb (NE Monsoon season): Ride on the east side of Phuket (Friendship beach, which is tidal, and the wind dies off in the middle of the day, so you have to be very lucky with the timing), and Koh Samui, which is a nice little island off the east coast of Thailand.
March/April: Hua Hin/Pranburi have thermal wind, but IMO it's hit and miss. (Nice when it's on)
July/August (Westerly winds): Phuket, West coast. Nai Yang is the kite beach at that time of year and it can get some decent wind from time to time. If it's windy then there will probably be some rain around with squalls.

What about Malaysia? East coast, theres a Club Med there and a local beach that gets a mention. Any good?
I'm in the same boat, I'm sitting in Perth, and want somewhere to go that I can leave the fam where theres stuff to do....
oTherwise I just wait till October I guess.
^^^ not sure what season it was (almost 30 years ago) but
i got out on a windsurfer there every day. Mainly pretty light though
