Why did this not progress further... almost 35 years later kitesurfing was born... Seems odd.

to be fair i knew it wasn't a direct descendant of kite surfing, Just a cool old extreme sports video with a funky track and bizarre bathing suits :)
As chrwar says, para sailing and similar sports are closer.
i was a windsurfer for 15 years ago. Kitesurfing since 2004. I never heard about that crazy sport. Awesome video
