Hi
I am going to mackay on tuesday and taking my kite gear with me.
I have it packed in a flying objects coffin bag which is 145cm long will i have any dramas at check in with this bag being the lenght it is.![]()
A bag that splits in half wins favrour at the check in counter. I've traveled with over 30kgs of kite gear but since the bag splits into 2 15kg bags I get away with it. At the end of the day, if it's over 30kgs, the baggage gorilla union won't allow it on.
My bag is 140cms long and technically that's under their oversize limits. Most of the time they will insist on dropping it at oversized but I prefer that anyway. Then it doesn't end up falling off a baggage carosel somewhere.
^^^^ Gees im not looking forward to flying with them at easter!
any idea what they are like with surfboard coffin bags?
is it 20kgs max u can take?
If you're over the allowance, you can purchase additional baggage allowance (allowance varies with class of travel and destination) on the manage your booking page; which is much cheaper than at the airport. (Max height is 277 cm, max weight of a single item 32kg)
www.qantas.com/au/en/manage-booking.html
Many other airlines around the world now charge per surfboard, even if they are packed together. It pays big time to travel as lightly as possible. ![]()
air newzealand is the shiz, i took a 30kg bike box ontop of 2 other peices of 25kg luggage, and they only charged me $120 CAD (canadian dollars) and that was vancouver to perth heh, quantas will over charge you and maybe crash and burn
i know your already there, but
a mate who worked for an airline said to me
1.Get there early, if they have had 4 people before you that are overwieght(baggage i mean) you will get stung
2.Smile and be happy, unless you miles over its generaly discretionary whether they charge, if youre a miserable tosser bring extra cash and you deserve it
Its worked for me so far been over a few times and no probs, lucky i guess
The thing is who can pack all their crap together at 23kgs? When I flew to Thailand I used my carry on as my clothes bag and packed my wakeboard and wakeskate along with vest, helmet and shoes in another bag which came to exactly 23kgs... Good luck fitting kites bars and harnesses as well, especially if you need to bring 3 or 4 kites.
You should see how much crap those course racing gooses bring to an event, I would be suprised if they have any prize money left if they win the thing.

If you are going to be over the weight limit on Qantas, I suggest that you pre-pay for the excess in advance on-line, as it's much cheaper than at the airport!
On a recent international flight on Qantas, I weighed my gear at home, pre-paid my excess on-line, and apparently my scales were out, because when they weighed my gear at the airport, I was 3 kgs over what I had paid for, and the bastards still charged me for the additional 3 Kilos! ![]()
Even when you try to do the right thing, they still screw you. [}:)]
Qantas only get my business if I have absolutely no other choice!
