Hi everyone
i have been doing kitesurfing for about 5 months and are wondering when would be a good time to start to unhook
i can get some big air and are just wondering if it is a good time to unhook
any help would be appreciated
Like Pornstar said, depower your kite (ALOT), unhook, Then try some flippsy dippsy stuff.
Probably brace yourself, You never land your first unhhook.
Laos make sure you set up your leash properly as no point in letting go, and you will and the kite flagging on the safety line.
Good luck ![]()
Yeah go for it!!
First try standing on the beach with your kite at 12. Pull the bar all the way in and hold it in. If the kite starts to fall backwards out of the sky, de-power a little bit and try again. Keep adjusting until your kite is happy to sit at 12 with the bar in for at least 10 secs. Note how much de-power you have.
Now try unhooking and just holding onto the kite (still on the beach) keeping it at 12 and pump the kite a bit and hook back in. Hook in and out a few times to get used to putting the loop back on to your spreader bar.
Get used to that, then power up and hit the water. Keep your kite powered and low and get lots of speed. When your ready, quickly de-power, bear down wind slightly (you need to be moving fast) and unhook. Ride for a bit then hook back in.
You'll want to do this a few times to get used to the pull of the kite and hooking back in. Make sure your safety is on properly so if you drop the bar your kite won't drag you down the beach.
Bob's your uncle![]()
Definatly don't do the beach unhooking thing with the kite at twelve unless u want to be superman. But if u do want to do it make sure your underpants are on the outside of your shorts so people understand what your doing
I don't see the big problem with unhooking your kite on the beach- as long you are in a big enough area and no one is in the way. Your safety will be attatched and you can simply let go if needed.
If you put the kite at 12, de-power and un-hook, it's not going to rip your arms off or pull you through the air. You can hold it easily with one hand.
I found this helpfull for the hooking back in part and the feel of the kite.
It doesnt take much of a gust to send you up when unhooked. I couldnt tell you how many times iv been lofted by a gust while unhooked, some landed (badly) others ending in broken boards and injuries to myself.
Yes you can let go but it isnt exactly good for your kite to be dropped onto sand, standing in the water would be a much better idea, same concept at body dragging.
But if you dont have the board skills to figure out how to hook back in while riding you aren't ready to try unhooked tricks.
If you can stand on the beach and comfortably hold onto the kite unhooked there isnt enough power there to do anything unhooked anyway, you probably wont even be able to ride upwind.
I gota agree with you 14nce your better off in the water to practice. The IKO used to teach students to launch their kites unhooked and then hook in to the chicken loop once the kite was flying, we used to have people flying around everywhere after they lost control of the kite while hooking in. I miss the old days of carnage on the beach where you could feel the tension in the air![]()
Why would u un hook on the beach who cares about the stupid safety part When are u ever going to be out in the water standing on the water ( trying to be like Jesus) with ur kite at twelve n u unhooked underneath it. It's a stupid practice n a stupid way to practice.
And dont put to much weight on ur back hand when u pop coz it will send u up like mary poppings try to send it down slightly if at all. ripped my kite in half after a raily went mary poppins on me ![]()
