I'm advertising my 5'8 Stewy Martin kiteboard in the buy/sell section and received the following email from mathew johnson (email name actually looked legit, but not the content)

"Hello,

Many thanks for your prompt mail, i am OK with your asking price on
it. For the pickup i will inform my freight who will be coming over to
your location for the pickup. Where is the it located for pickup?
Regarding the payment i will instruct my PA to issue a check with sum
of $2000 in your name and send to you for the payment and as soon as
you confirm the payment you will deduct your sales and update the
excess to my freight. Kindly get back to me with your Info ; Full
name, Address and Phone Number for the payment to be issue out."

I replied with "I now have your email and details, have been forwarded to the authorities"

Sellers watch out for this scammer.

Yes, the lovely Mathew made a similar offer for my Cab Custom. I thought, if his PA is going to do all the other stuff, why isn't the PA sending me the e-mail too?

I told him to go f#*k himself.

If there's a way to screw him out of his scam-arsed $2000 I'd like to know?

We locked this guy down already, suspect he's shifted to a new persona.

Best thing to do is to let Seabreeze know ... if you reckon you've found a scammer, please forward the email to support...at.. seabreeze.com.au (or use the feedback link at base of each page, but forwarding the email is best as we get all the headers).

We're pretty active about locking these guys out.

Take care people.

As Laurie said, if anything looks dodgy please report it to the moderators so we can fix things up...

In related news, I'm not sure if we told the forum-goers but we have a new enforcer in town!

Got a similar response to an ad on Gumtree (not kiting gear, I love Seabreeze for buy/sell), it is a phishing scam attempting to gather PayPal details (credit card etc.). Excerpt included below ...

You can now send me your PayPal email so i can pay in right away and also include your address in your reply. If you don't have a paypal account, you can easily set up one...log on to www.paypal.com.au and sign up its very easy... i would have loved to talk to you on phone but i work mainly offshore, our phone is down on the rig right now due to bad weather, that was why i sent you a text, i even wonder how my message deliver to your phone but for now we can only communicate through the same mailing channel.await your reply asap.

****ers tried to get me too on an ad from Gumtree....

Hi,
I am very serious about my offer of $17,200 for the Toyota
Landcruiser GXL (4x4) (1994) 4D Wagon but can't come over to inspect
it cos i'm presently working offshore with the Royal Australian Navy
Submarine service but i have gone through the pics and description
which i'm okay with. I am buying it as a gift for my cousin who also
resides in Australia and paypal is the easiest way for me to pay cos i
don't have access to my bank account through the internet as i will
need to confirm some info which can't be done till i'm back home, but
i have my bank account attached to my paypal account. All i need to
make the paypal payment is your paypal email address. Paypal is
reliable, secure and easy to use, all you need to do is to visit
www.paypal.com.au and register with them in case if you don't have an
account with them already. I am looking forward to your reply and i
would arrange for the pick up and delivery of the item with a
freighter/ pick up agent after payment have been sorted.

Regards,
Zac.

In case anyone is interested..........

It includes the trailer &the fridge. The price is at $15,000. The car has 400,000 on it but
drives like a dream. It's had a new engine/head at some stage .We used it as a kiting set-up for a trip from Tassie to Perth. Went to Cooktown, Eljim, Exmouth etc.
Going overseas so no reasonable offer refused from fellow kiters

I might be a bit slow, I do not see the scam in this add? All he is asking for is the email adress to give you the money. Isnt that what you want when selling stuff. Furthermore, when I use paypal for ebay, paypal works as an insurance for safe transactions? What have I missed?
